To my understanding:

For the sponsor it changes to "in process" after AOR is sent out.

For the primary applicant it changes to "in process" after AIP has been sent out- This would be the second stage of the process.

Hi, had a question about visiting US. I have canadian work permit (OWP) while I am waiting for my AIP ( spouse sponsorship). I don't have a job yet and hence have not applied for canada re-entry permit (which is basically visit visa). I don't come from a visa exempt country. Can I visit my family in US and return only with OWP papers? Has anyone done that? I'm just paranoid that if I'm stopped at the border, I'll get stuck and lose my inland processing.

Hello Everybody,

I just needed to know whether my wife, who has a multiple entry visa for 5 years to Canada, can leave the country for a 2 weeks vacation if she applied for a "family sponsorship" and didnt get an answer yet.
i was told that she MAY be refused to enter Canadian soil if she leaves, but if this is the case what are the reasons they wouldn't allow her to come-in again?

Thanks a lot guys and good luck to all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Geo

I think this is a frequently asked question for everyone who is going through sponsorship & PR process.

The CIC website indicates that you can go abroad as long as you take the risk of not being allowed back to Canada at the border. So, people don't usually take the risk and stay inland until they get the sponsorship approved. I, myself, wanted to go for vacations with my wife but I decided not to take the chance and I'm still waiting for AIP.

However, I've seen some people posting here saying they were able to enter back to Canada without any problem as long as they bring these documents with them: AOR (e-mail indicating that you have applied for sponsorship and they received the application), receipt that proves you paid the fees and marriage certificate.

really!!, we've got AOR seen oct. and it still says application received.

I received AOR in September and my status also says "application received"

This is just my guess, but I believe they put it to "processing" once they start looking at your application. (i.e just before AIP)

Ecas is not dependable and should not be used as a gauge.I have a relative who completed the PR process and his Ecas status never changed from docs. received. Don't stress over it. If you want to know your status make a call to to the call centre and check with one of the agents .

I can only go based on my own experience but as the sponsor after I received the AOR my status changed to in process. After I was approved as sponsor it changed to decision made while the primary applicant's status moved from application received to in process.

Morning all good news I got AIP so stoked right now. Got email today at 8:38am pst

This is AIP right:

This letter refers to your application for permanent residence under the spouse or common-law
partner in Canada class.
It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent resident
status as a member of the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class. However, a final
decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident
have been met. These requirements include medical, security and background checks for you
and, if applicable, all of your family members, both in Canada and abroad, even if they are not
applying to join you in Canada at this time. You cannot become a permanent resident until you
and all your family members have met these requirements.
You may now apply for an open work permit, which will allow you to work in the occupation and
location of your choice. You may also apply for a study permit. If applying for a study permit
please ensure you include a letter from the educational institution you plan to attend. The letter
should outline the type of course or program for which you are registered, the start date and the
expected completion date. To obtain the correct forms please visit the Citizenship and
Immigration Canada Internet web site at [http://www.cic.gc.ca] or contact the Immigration Call
Centre at the number indicated below.

I sent medical & police checks all together so hopefully get DM soon here

Congrats!!!

It's so good to hear that you, as a July 23rd applicant', have received the AIP.
