Hey everyone!

So me and my partner are currently going through the process of applying online to help me get my PR in Canada (I'm a British 28yo male and my gf is from Calgary, go flames). We both currently live in Canada whilst I am on a working holiday visa until Nov 2025, and we have chosen to go for an outland application.

However, I am deeply confused by the whole application and wondered if anyone could shed some light on the situation for me? I have a few questions that need answering but I can't find the answers i need...

1. Do I need to complete the online application? Or does my partner (sponsor) need to, as she is a Canadian citizen?

2. Under the section 'dependables', of which I don't have any and nor does she (apart from myself if the application is successful) I am not given an option of listing none? It also asks me to list all members of my family in that section, do I need to do that if they aren't coming to Canada at all??

3. Does my PR only last as long as my passport is valid? My current passport expires in 03/2026, so if that was the case I'm assuming that I need to get a new one BEFORE we apply?

Sorry for all the stupid questions but I'm finding the whole thing so confusing/overwhelming!! Any help would be massively appreciated, thanks everyone <3

They are not stupid questions. Lol
The application - both sponsor and applicant need to sign certain areas. There is a guide you can use and also the document checklist it will tell you who needs to sign and where .

No dependents ?? Put n/a. List all your family members , it needs information about your siblings, parents etc.. immigration will ask you for everything ..

Your PR has nothing to do with your passport , when your passport expire , just renew it.. the card is valid for 5 years I think( I could be wrong ) but you renew it if you want or go for citizenship when it expires.

If anything else some one can add , or if I’m missing something they will add to it.. if I’m wrong they will put the correct answers .

The important part of this application process is making sure everything is truthful and you do not leave any space blank . If it is not truthful you run the risk of getting your application rejected and if your application is incomplete your application will be returned adding a month to your already long process.

My tip is before you fill a form google how to fill it . Example imm 55669 how to fill . Also it's best to fill and sign your names exactly how they are on your international passport.

Good luck

Also make sure you confirm you have the latest version of the forms when you submit the application.

Just want to point out that
"No dependents ?? Put n/a. List all your family members , it needs information about your siblings, parents etc.. immigration will ask you for everything .. "

Is for the additional family information form (IMM5406) . Not the actual application. (in the old days IMM0008 for paper/pdf format)

Good luck. The guide is very helpful and read it multiple times. Use instruction in combination of both the form and the guide when filling in particular section.

Hi Barney,

I do have to ask the obvious question:
Are you and your partner deemed to be Common-Law, meaning you have cohabited together for a minimum of 365 days?
