is it required to send a passport together with application for extension?

No. Just photocopies of passport pages showing passport number, dates of issue and expiry, name and date of birth of passport holder and the "marked" pages.

If you have a visitor record you need to copy that, and as job_seeker said, any "marked pages" - [edited] the passport page that has been stamped on your last visit to Canada - and any other marked pages.

If you want to pay at a financial institution you will need to order IMM 5401 in advance, it is not available online. I hear that it can take a long time to arrive.
But the good news is you can pay online with a credit card, you must print out the receipt and include it with the other documents.

Allow enough time to ship the documents, 2 - 4 days, you have to get the application in 30 days before your current visa expires.

But Suin you landed recently so you are a Canadian permanent resident now. :)

I am asking not about myself ;) just curious, in case some of my relatives need it in future.

Okay, you want to be on top of the situation now eh :)

sure, just in case - it's always better to know some info in advance than to search for it in short times. :)

excuse my curiosity again - what they sent back if the application is approved? is that some form that needs to be carried together with passport?

CPC sends a VR with a leave by date.

I received two envelopes when they approved my extension. One was a letter stating "Your application has been approved and your new document will be sent to you separately", that I should undergo medical examination. And a lot more. Plus a IMM 1017.

The other was a Visitor Record with the conditions (prohibited from work and from attending any educational institution, etc, must leave by 13 Aug 2010) and remarks ("Temporary resident status maintained as per R183(6). Must undergo immigration medical examination within 90 days. Medical forms have been mailed separately.").

Miryam, can I ask how long you had been in Canada before extending the visa.

5 months (arrived in Canada on December 8th, 2008). Vegreville office received the application 30 days before my visitor status expired.

Since this thread started, I see that the processing time has gone down from 73 days to 65 days, so they are starting to catch up on the backlog.

I noticed that the time has been dropping.

Would anyone like to make a guess what the number of days will be on 31st March 2010 ?

My guess is 52 days....

Haha I cannot believe how fast they are going. I have estimated that they are moving at about 11 days at a time.
I think it might be closer to 45 or 40 by March 31st. Then again it could shoot right up to 90 or 100 you never know.
