How to Get Canadian Driving License -for Newcomers

Dear Qorax,

I am working in Oman and I have my driving License from 1995 which is Left Hand Drive.
I do have my Indian DL also from past 22 year.
Last time when I was on US / Canada tour I used IDL from Oman and driven the car in both countries.
Please let me know for getting the G2 license in Ontario, can I get IDL and letter from Oman ROP.
Is it valid or I have to get letter from Indian Transport Authority (Right Hand drive) & IDL to get G2 license in Ontario.

What exactly you mean by swapping?
After swapping if I go back to India or Oman can I use the license or Canadian Authorities take away the license?

Please advise.

The best solution for you would be getting a certificate of experience from Oman RTA. When you present the letter to drivers test center they will send you directly for G Test . If you pass then consider yourself lucky. If you don't then you have to start from G2.

Letter from Oman is more than enough for you. They wont hold any of your past license so don't worry and give first test after getting proper training.

I will travel to Calgary next week and i want to confirm the following that i have to get for the driving license :

1- I have valid UAE D license issue in 2006.
2- I have valid international D license issue from UAE last month.
3- I have Qatar and Egypt D license also

I saw in the forums that i should get letter from UAE traffice for my driving experience and i didnt have time to do that.... is this letter mandatory?? are the above licenses i had are not enough???

Also in case that letter in mandatory , then from where in Abu dhabi i can get it? as i ask the traffic Dept. they said we didnt issue these types of letters.

U require the LOA. It can be obtained from Adh-Muroor. U r not alone, many have obtained it from there. Pls check the Dubai thread.

Captain Qorax is absolutely right. today I got the driving experience letter from Abu Dhabi. They have a standard letter that they issue to Canada. In fact , once I told the officer that I need this letter , he asked me if I need it for Canada. Brother, you just go to Traffic department opposite to Police College. go to the upper floor of the main building. Behind the information desk there is a long corridor. go to the last hall at the end of the corridor. If you face any problem, I can PM you my contact number if that can help you. Good luck man.

1. It the LOA is in 'Arabic' - then it has to be translated in English, thru a 'Legal Translator' & then attested by MFA. U may skip that MFA part & get it "Re-translated" here, in Canada. However, if it is in English [or Bi-lingual] - no further action/s needed. It'd accepted as such, on its 'face value'.

2. If u intend to drive a 'Rent-a-Car' in the interim pd, till u get the Canadian DL -- u must have an IDP/IDL. U can then drive for 2 months in Ontario with your 'overseas' DL. If u aren't keen on driving before u obtain the Canadian DL -- no need for the IDP/IDL.

My husband just ran into a snag when trying to get his, we did get his driver history here in the US before he left. However, when he moved here from Canada in 1997 and obtained his drivers license here, the DMV office input that he moved from California, not Canada. So now Canada is saying there is a mistake (there is, of course) and will only give him a G2 license until it is fixed or he retakes the tests - then he can have a G license.

I don't expect the DMV to fix something from 14 years ago, but he is going to call tomorrow and hope, or take the test.
