Hi Qorax,
Can you please provide me with the form of the letter of authentication. I have my foreign driver's lisence translated and notarized. My driving lisence was given to me from the roads and transport authority in my home country based on my driver's lisence. Then I translated and notarized the lisence. Do you think this is enough?
Thanks

No.
U require the "Driver's Extract" from your MTO/RTA.

Can I drive alone with my IDP in Ontario, even though I have a G1 Licence?

Hi Qorax!

Can I drive alone with my IDP in Ontario, even though I have a G1 Licence?

As a matter of fact, I have my G1 Licence, however I would like to practice more by myself with my IDP. Is that possible or legal?

Thanking you in advance for your usual kind support.

Regards,

Moloyo

With only G1 you are not allowed to drive alone but if you can bring international driving licence then no problem.

I was stopped by a cop while driving on G1 alone and he told me that you are not allowed but when I showed my IDL he let me go.

ok guys...after reading some pages it was not cleat for me points

i got a european/portuguese driver licence, i drive for 9 years now cars

From what i read, and please correct me...because i could understand that wrong
i will get a G2 licence, because i got over 24months of experience?

before i leave my country i should get a paper saying what is my driving licence...and get it translated?
Also, it will help me get a International Driving Licence?

And if i get some more months driving with a G2 licence, then i could apply for the full G?

Thanks...this is really different from my country...we're on XXI...i think it's time to some stuff could be more standardized between countries.

Hope to get an answer ;)
thanks

If you get a letter from the licence issuing authority (in english or a notarised translation), you shall be able to get one attempt at a G-licence after passing the written exam.

Here is what I did before I left:
1. I got the letter from the licencing people and
2. an international driving licence.

Upon arriving:
1. I rented a car using the international driving licence. (& brought a cheap GPS) to practice
2. When I felt confident I went and sat the written exam. and got the G2 licence. Once you have your G2 your international licence becomes invalid! (I did not know that untill much later)
3. Hired a driving instructor & got in more practice. These people know the ropes. They will guide you through the whole process. It was the most worthwile $250 I ever spent. I had my G licence with in 2 weeks of landing.

When you are ready go and take the G exam. If you fail you will go back to the G2 licence.

Good Luck :)

In Europe, you can take your Portugese license all over the place and it will work anywhere but in Canada, if your particular country doesn't have an agreement with the province you move to, you will have to take the test.

If you are moving to Ontario, you will need an abstract letter in English or French from a Portugese traffic authority or police and you will need your license translated into English or French. When you go to apply for your license in Ontario, if you provide this, they will allow you to take the G road test and get a full G license without the waiting period. Of course you must also pass the written exam first.

Mostly about the rules of the road. You can read the one for Ontario here: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/

Since you have a driver license from Portugal, in BC, you have to take a written knowledge test first. After you pass, you would get a Learner's License and have to take a road test in order to receive your regular class 5 license.
