Getting married

Hello Everyone

I met my Canadian boyfriend during summer 2010 - at a family wedding and last year during feb he proposed - we have set the date for may 2012 we booked the venue a few weeks after he proposed last year.

I'm a UK British Citizen and I've been in and out of Canada twice in the year and had no problems at border control - I've come home to UK for the christmas/ new year holidays and will be going back to Canada to prepare the final things for the wedding and then make a quick trip back to UK to bring my mum for the wedding in May as shes old and doesn't want to fly alone.

On this third trip should I just now say I'm getting married in May and as I'll have a return ticket for April to go back to get mum - will they see that as weird?

I've always said I'm here to see my Boyfriend and they ask me a few questions I answer and no issue.

On this trip should I say I'm getting married and here now to get the last things prepared for the wedding - I have family all in Canada - but live with my Boyfriend when in Canada.



* should I tell border control I'm getting married in May?
* will they think its strange I'm going back to UK to bring my mum over in April for the wedding?
* should I have any wedding things with me? - I have the venue address they can confirm we booked it 9 months ago

Any help and advice would be most kind.

There is no law against getting married on a visit visa but you also don't have to provide any more info than they ask for.

If I get pulled at border control - as when I say I'm here to sort my wedding plans - but I'll have a return ticket to go UK a month before wedding to bring my mum over will they ask why I'm doing that?

will they ask why I have traveled twice into canada before this would be my third visit within a year? I've never overstayed - have a good travel history all over the states - never had any issues.

Like I said we booked wedding venue last year - and I just wish to start my life once I get married.

Just tell the truth. They tend to like that. You still don't have to offer more info than they ask for though. Just answer what they ask. Like if you arrive at the border and tell them your life story without asking, they will really get suspicious you are up to something.

That is only if you apply inland and even then, if you are visa exempt and leave for a short trip, you will probably get away with it but true if you leave and can't get back, you lose your application if you have applied inland. If you apply outland, there is no problem though.

Getting married outland is my suggestion too,but I can't be sure...UK citizen,she can get away with almost everything.

I head back to Canada in the next few days - and on arriving at the airport - I'll tell the border officer that I'm here
to finish booking all the things for my wedding in May.

I'm not sure how the officer will take that? as he/she will know I'll be getting married and I'm sure they will then ask 100 questions how I met my husband? how soon did we choose to get married. I met him two years ago and after he proposed last year we then planned to get married this year - giving us a two year relationship.

also as this will be my third trip to canada in a year I'm sure I'll get to have to do this secondary and reading lots of threads here secondary seems a scary process as they think your doing something wrong? and they interrogate you ...

what do you guys think?

Once I get married will just do the PR inland and remain in Canada once granted -

Once piece of advice - please don't apply inland. You can apply outland while staying with your husband in Canada. Since you're from the UK, you could be done in as little as three months if you go outland. Inland means you're going to wait a minimum of one year (likely longer). My husband is from the US and we submitted his file outland while he was staying with me in Canada.

Yeah, don't do inland. You can apply outland and still stay in Canada until you get it. If you still haven't gotten it when your visit status is getting close to expiry, you can just apply to extend. You are under implied status until you hear back and because of the processing time, you can apply by mail and you will buy yourself an extra 4 months before you even hear back and by that time, your PR should be done.

It refers to the location that your PR application (not the sponsorship part) is processed,
inland = in Canada,
outland = other countries.

Just to add to the confusion, you can be in Canada and still apply outland (many people choose this option if they are already living here)
