Hello All,

My girlfriend is travelling to Canada next month and we are thinking of getting married before she fly.

Is it okay to get married ? Do we need to inform immigration before landing or is it okay to inform once she land in Canada and change her status from single to married ??

If you get married before she lands, then she needs to return her visa to the visa office, let them know you're married, and then complete all of the paperwork to add you to her application. You will have to complete a medical and provide police certificates and wait for CIC to add you to the application and issue new visas. She cannot get married and then land in Canada on a visa issued to a single person. If she does that then she will be committing misrepresentation, will never be able to sponsor you and may get her own PR status revoked. If by any chance she was included in her parents' application as a dependent, then marrying before she lands in Canada effectively cancels her visa since she is no longer classified as a dependent in that case and can't be included in her parent's application.

Best option is for her to land as a single person and then marry after she has become a PR.

She got student visa and I’m not planing to travel or apply as a spouse though. My family is in Canada too.

Hello All,

Hello Amishkumar,

I landed in Canada for the first time in April this year on Study permit.

After getting visa and before flying to Canada I got marry to love of my lyfe my soulmate and after 5 month of my arrival in Canada i sent her sponsore to visit the Canada and she applied for the visa on 10th sept and got her visa in end of October and now she is with me(Now planing for her work permit as per my friends suggestion who gave me advise to bring her to Canada)

So it is okay to get marry before she lands in Canada because you are getting marry after got her visa. If you where already married or got married after applied for visa and showed her status as single then there will be issue but as you said you are planing to get marry it’s totally okay you will get marriage certificate which will clearly show that you guys got married after she got her visa which will Good enough and there is nothing wrong with it.

Also you do not need to apply for the status change until and unless you are making any changes in you student permit like change of University or getting you visa stamp transfer in to new Passport or applying for extension as you are not PR holder, whenever you got any notification from immigration they will always ask for your status and by de time your status get change you should provide them a correct information.(normally for single, married, Divorced, child information if any something like this)

In short I have been gone through all this process recently and I haven't had any issues in my status change or anything like that.

I hope this information is helpful for you!

I had it from my fried and I followed and I got succes and I’m sure you will too withiugt any worry.
