There is lot of worry around DDs. Credit Cards are safer, but then not all people have it (especially ones with international validity).
Why does no one go with the 3rd and the most reliable option, MONEY ORDER ? You just can't go wrong with it.
I guess this is all about the impatience of getting to know whether the application went through or not. No one will know if they charged you or not. But you can be rest assured, if your application is alright, they will get the money for sure. Otherwise, you can always en-cash back your money order.

I think the DDs in foreign currency are valid for six months by default. No need to worry. 3 months validity is for domestic instruments.
However, I have a concern of my own. On my DD it says pay to: 'Receiver General For Canada' instead of as specified on the payment form : 'THE RECEIVER GENERAL FOR CANADA' is that an issue. Please comment, kinda freaking out.
