Once he/she is a Canadian citizen then its Canada's responsibility even if he/she do some terrorist activity. They should make sure about their credibility before granting citizenship. You cannot give citizenship to a person and later if he do terrorism then dumb him back to his country. What Canada is trying to do?Other countries are Canada's Garbage bin?

Take all the good ones and dumb all bad ones back.
That would be nice if Canada get to pick who gets citizenship or not. Unfortunately once an applicant qualifies and applies for citizenship, the applicant pretty much will get citizenship. May take some of them longer to get it but they will get it, even the BAD ones. So the BAD ones will get citizenship at some point. How can Canada be responsible for them, if the BAD ones even get citizenship.

If Canada needs to be responsible for their citizens, Canada should be able to weed out the BAD ones and dump them back to their native country.

So you want a nanny state. Canada to be responsible for the citizen's action instead of each citizen being accountable for their OWN actions. Nice to know where you stand.

"With great power comes great responsibility". A great line don't you think?

And that is why proof of knowledge and comprehension of the English language was extended to 64 when applying for citizenship.

So much drama here on this forum due to misinterpretation and failure to comprehend.
At least something is clarified.

Dear friends,
If in october Harper government does not re-elected,can the new government makes any change in this bill or not.
I'm really support many things in the new law. However,I have Inside canada 4 years and 2 month as non PR and finally get a 0 day credit.
Let's see now:4 years 2 month as non PR (Refugee claim)+ 4 years PR + 6-8 month citizenship process = Almost 9 years to become Canadian citizen.
So sad :'( :'(

Technically yes, but it is not going to happen. The law is apparently too popular with the voters.

I am still wondering why they increased the residency requirement only with one year.
Even with the new requirements it's still very easy to be granted with citizenship.

What a disappointment for those who were thinking that now they got more value in the citizenship.

Disappointed for the real Canadians who were thinking that this law will indeed strengthen the citizenship.

Only one year of increased residency , this is a total joke. Most of the strong nations require more residency.

I guess swiss people are a bunch of sadists according to you. Their law says 8 to 18 years to qualify with minimum of 6 years in Switzerland. Guess what!! A lot of people would love to get their hands on a Swiss citizenship that they are willing to meet hard requirement to get it. Talk about EARNING their Swiss citizenship. I guess the word EARN is not part of your vocabulary.

You being an admitted NDP supporter, it must means you want your life given to you on a silver platter without any concept of earning.

Do don't trust Wikipedia too much, you can apply for Swiss citizenship after you get your Permit C, which is around 6 years, also depends from which cantons your are living.

Again, not true. Foreigners with no direct blood ties to Switzerland through either birth or marriage must live in the country for at least ten years (reduced from 12 years by a new law passed in June 2014) before they can apply for citizenship. (Years spent in the country between age ten and 20 count double). The person must be well integrated, familiar with customs and traditions, law abiding, and pose no threat to internal or external security.

The State Secretariat for Migration will then “green light” an applicant’s request to begin the naturalisation process but that does not mean citizenship is certain. Rather, cantons and municipalities have their own requirements that must be met. One canton, for example, might require applicants to live for two years in the region while another might require a decade. Swiss citizenship is only acquired by those applicants who, after obtaining the federal naturalisation permit, have also been naturalised by their communities and cantons. As a rule, there is no legally protected right to being naturalised by a community and a canton.

By the way, I am Swiss born..As Screech said, this citizenship is EARNED the hard way.

BTW, I didn't get this information from wiki. I got it from switzerland citizenship law. So please read up on it and inform yourself more.

As polara pointed out, I did miss out on the 10 year requirement for foreigners with no blood connection.

I gave polara69 +1 because he/she believes in EARNING citizenship instead of handing it over.

Screech,
I am NOT arguing about the earning part. People already give enough in terms of their hard labor to earn citizenship in 4 years. 80-100 hour work weeks with back breaking labor for 4 years is sufficient in my dictionary to earn your citizenship. And call about 5 years then you are turning a sadist.

Keep increasing the residency requirement, the immigration will come to a trickle. The real estate will most definitely crash (atleast 30%) as its currently being buoyed by immigrants bringing in cash.

Make no mistake, Canada is no Switzerland.
