What is your definition of socialism?
Universal healthcare is not socialism? EI is not socialism? But making CERB permanent is?
Canada doesn't have universal healthcare - it's a hybrid public/private system that is extremely broken.

EI isn't socialism, it's insurance, with premiums that are deducted from our paychecks.

UBI is the state interfering with and attempting to control the means of income and production, albeit through a side-door.

Nonsense. UBI is not controlling the means of production.

OTOH, Canada has directly funded vaccine making facilities (in the past and during this pandemic). So Canada's healthcare is socialist.

Friends, you are stepping away from the main topic ... Please, let's get back to the topic that interests us ...

As I said in the very first post of this topic, human nature is often bad by nature ...

It is a phenomenon that I have noticed: Newcomers are egoists, and, as the French expression says `` They see no further than their nose '' ... Most of the time before their oath of citizenship they are pro-liberals ... But curiously and suddenly they turn into fervent conservatives and anti-immigrationists when they are protected by a Canadian passport ...

People are amnesic: Have you forgotten Bill 61? ... Who tells you that an O'toole government will not put it back on the table if it succeeds? ... And above all, the most dangerous: Who tells you that an O'toole government (even a minority: they orchestrate the ministries, including ircc), will not turn your citizenship applications over, by tightening the rules (or minimum, if they cannot vote for a change of the rules, a referral to ask you to re-apply online = endless additional delays).

I can understand the economic trends to the right of some of the speakers here ... But I can't really understand the fact of defending the Conservatives when we have a pending citizenship application ... (And who risks being returned to us? if the Conservatives win ).

I think we cannot afford the '' luxury '' of wishing O'toole victory in our situation ... It will be catastrophic ... Question: Are you masochosists?

Again this morning, Legault reaffirmed his support for the Conservatives ... I do not understand why he is meddling with the federal campaign, it's scary ...

, Piotr.

Quebec wants to become a country within a country and a total Francophone country. Whichever Federal party supports that idea will get support from Quebec parties. Now about defending conservatives, had the liberals put someone more competent on the position of Imm Minister instead of a dancing chimpanzee this backlog could have be averted.

I'd think even if O'toole came to power, his government would have better priorities than throwing Immigration into dark ages. You can see from this campaign that he's moved to the left on every position possible and he will govern as such if given the chance. I'm tired of fake liberal promises & them taking refugees a priority as opposed to tax paying residents/Work-permits/Spousal visa. Sure let a few refugees in but they need not feed them tax dollars. If they're competent enough to come here, they ought to be competent enough to make a fine living.

Trudeau will lose this time & badly too.

It's nice to have the money to fund vaccine making overseas. I'd prefer my country to have its own capabilities in both vaccine research and vaccine manufacture. Canada is no longer the country that once gave insulin to the world. We need to (and can) change a few things to get back on track.

Which 21st century industry does Canada have world-leading capabilities in? Semiconductors? EVs and solar? Biosimilars? Internet platforms? Healthcare IT? Fintech? Smart manufacture and IoT? The answer is none of the above... we are an also-ran.

It's great to be a rich first world country, of course. But if you're not creating value yourself, you are paying somebody else to do it for you, and at some point you start running out of money to do so. What does Canada have? A bunch of cozy oligopolies in banking and telecom, commodities, some real estate and construction, service industries which cannot be outsourced to India or China, and uncompetitive manufacturing.

Number of unicorns by country (let's leave the US, China and India out): • Unicorns by country 2021 | Statista
UK 27
Germany 15
Korea 11
Israel 11
Brazil 10
Canada... 4

Incredibly, this has nothing to do with lack of funding. See here... Narwhals and Unicorns— Where are Canada’s Billion Dollar Startups? | by Lawrence | Medium. "Canada receives the second most venture capital funding amongst OECD countries on an absolute basis, as a percentage of GDP and per capita. Measured against other OECD countries, Canada produces the least number of unicorns and narwhals."

It's time to stop wearing lack of ambition like some badge of honor. And what's worse is telling ambitious new immigrants that lack of ambition is the Canadian way. Because it's not. A key part of what got Canada into the club of wealthy countries was the drive and innovation of earlier generations of immigrants. This has nothing to do with universal healthcare, which both the UK and Germany provide their citizens, or being a country that takes care of its weak/poor. This is about the worrying trend of turning into a society, that values proclaiming wokeness above being productive.

I agree. If politics keep this thread distracted, fewer and fewer people would visit here. Not that I think it's not an important topic, but in the spirit of keeping us focused and engaged, I think people interested in talking about the effects of politics and elections on immigration can move to a separate dedicated thread.

I think public pressure through media is a more effective way. Legal actions can take years in the courts.
I still think shaming IRCC on social media using the information we already have is an effective way.
from the document posted in this thread, IRCC does care about its perception in the eyes of the public.

page 40 of the document (page 4 of protected B) :
Media attention to e-apps has been minimal, however, on social media, there have been about five questions per month in the last few months, mostly clients asking if they can apply online. Following the pilot launch of 180 e-applications, there was some chatter on social media criticizing IRCC for the discrepancy between processing times of these e-applications (2-3 months) as compared to paper applications (over a year). There is also intermittent negative media attention to the backlog of citizenship grant applications.
but frankly, there has not been a coherent action done by people who have been waiting. We need stuff like a Twitter storm, for example, to agree on a hashtag and ask IRCC to process early applicants from 2019 and 2020. To mention facts from the documents we have, such as the backlog, the possibility of waiting for 4 years, the injustice between online and paper applications, in the tweets, Everyone needs to be on Twitter twitting at least once a day asking IRCC Twitter handle @CitImmCanada to get it together.

We have a thread for every month. We have threads for people waiting for tests, waiting for DM, waiting for an oath, people can go to these threads and inform people about the hashtag. I think stuff like this works. Many people on this site don't check this thread. I don't blame them, we tend to go off-topic and bicker and argue.

Dude...we get it. Canada is a mediocre country. Why are you responding to a thread about what socialism means? Use this energy to get a US green card :)

You are assuming I don't have a green card. You also seem to be suggesting people need to either share your "mediocre" (your word) vision for Canada, or leave.

Canada is a big country, and a liberal democracy at that. Plenty of space for my preference to pedal harder, and yours to remain laidback. Plenty of space for some of us to focus on growing the pie, while others spend their time figuring out how to split it. I nurse no grudge against people who want to take it easy. It does get very puzzling though, if you suggest everyone should subscribe to that philosophy, or they're not Canadian.

Whats wrong man? Why are you getting worked up? You made a lot of assumptions yourself. The previous thread you replied to was about the textbook definition of socialism. Not a value judgement on whether its a good thing or a bad thing.

Clearly, you are unhappy with some life choices you made. You can take steps to fix it or try to change the mindset of 37 million people by ranting here. Let me know what works. Its telling that you didnt stay back to change India, but think you can change Canada :) Maybe you 1.4 billion was too much to change, but you can change 37 million. Good luck!

Your last line is a classic strawman argument. I suggested no such thing, but keep harping on it.

Strawman? Read the last couple of pages on this thread, and see how many times you hinted people head over south. There's no need to change the mindset of 37 million people. 42% of the vote in 2019 went to Conservative/BQ. Canada is more than Liberal/NDP.
