unlike you might think it was not in pakistan it was in canada,
yesterday i was in mississauga at dinner time ..... i went to one of the famous desi restaurants and ordered my food ..... my table was close to the service desk ..... as i was waiting for my food ..... a new immigrant pakistani sister entered the restaurant with her resume and went to service desk ..... and made the biggest mistake that almost all of us make as new immigrants and told the restaurant owner " i am a new immigrant to canada and im looking for a job ", sister looked well educated, confident and well spoken .... had she not told them she was new to canada no one would have guessed ..... well long story short they took her interview offered her job working less then part time working hours worst working time, unpaid training with $6 an hour rate after training .......... this is not just illegal, its wrong at so many different levels ....... i know if she was applying at Mcdonalds, burger king or tim hortons this would have not happened ....... like myself and many other immigrants that came to canada i am sure that sister will find her way and become successful one day .... but the question is .... how much contribution our pakistani community is going to have in her success .... or if this trend will continue and WE WILL ALL BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER ONLY TO KICK THEM WHEN THEY ARE DOWN ........ i think like all other good deeds being unfair and unpredictable starts from within our own community.
my suggestion to all newcomers is ..... i know all of you are waiting for your passport but please ask question about your options after coming to canada .... and what can you guys do before coming to canada that will help you guys after you come here ..... and every one that is already here let us please try and help our newcomer friends ...... just because we are out of that hole does not mean every one has to go through the same
For everyone in Canada, I would strongly suggest that you network with people and one of the forums for that specific purpose is PPF (Pakistan Professional Forum - Canada), just in case, you aren't already aware of. PPF arranges, though not frequent and that too in GTA only, some events, where you would find many people working at different levels at different places. I happened to attend one, about few months before, and I know more people than if I hadn't attended it. Though, I am still struggling, it is nevertheless good to go. I have seen networking paying off to people. You can join PPF on Facebook and where-from, you can keep yourself updated on any events being organized.
Further, new people can try Employment Ontario to either brush up or improve upon their skill-set to be better able to land into a job / career. Moreover, unemployment ratio is the highest among immigrants, with one of the reasons, generally talked about, being English / Communication skills. To cope up with that, I am not sure, how effective Government's English Language Centres are effective.
Out of many people you network, you would find few people, who would be willing to help you extra mile, if you have patience and the foremost, trust in God.
