Further to the tax filing conversation.. when I got married in Jan 2011 I sent CRA a letter informing them of the marriage and explaning the situation. So this is technically the first year I am filing as "married". Would I send my Nikka Nama with the tax return? and also my husband works so do I just convert that into dollars when I state his income? How would this work?

As far as, I had the conversation with CRA, they didnt want me to send the nikah nama but they wanted me to notify them of the worldwide income of my spouse, (coz your spousal or dependent claim depends on that income) so they asked me for the date, place/country of marriage, n world wide income. But you can ask CRA for nikkah nama and YES you have to convert the amount into Canadian dollars, CRA use a conversion chart of currencies http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/xchng_rt-eng.html

You don't need to send anything with your tax return. If they ask for any proof of marriage, then you will have to send your Nikkah nama and its translation.

As far as your husband's total income is concerned, take his income for 2011 and convert it into CAD rate as of DEC 31, 2011. Now remember you might not get anything back from them if your husband makes good enough money and you are working here, as your husband is not dependent on you for support in this case.

Hmm... what if your wife is not working in Pakistan and you do not send any monetary help. What kind of affect does that have?

thanks for the quick replies. I'll probably give CRA a call on monday and ask them what the deal is. I don't want to claim my husband as a dependant or anything - just want to be honest in filing my taxes so I don't have any problems in the future.. I'm guessing they'll ask me to convert his income into canadian dollars - what's strange is that technically he's not a permant resident so his income back-home shouldn't matter - anyways we'll find out monday what they say.

I thought this was a immigration forum :P

Anyways, if you all are talking about taxes, then i got married last year so when i did my taxes yesterday for the first time since ive been married and i got a huge chunk back. Im really happy about it. whatever you have earned at your job, for the first $10,500 there will be no tax and the amount will be returned to you because of your status (Married).

Yes you will need to send a copy of your nikah nama (English+Urdu). I also had money transfer receipts to prove that i have been sending money back home to my wife.

Regards,
Omar

As per my personal experience . CRA required me the copy of Nikah Nama with translation and in this regard my tax evaluation was delayed last year.

Be Honest !

I filed my taxes via netfile last year as a married person. Got a huge chunk of money (i think it was like CAD3000) back from the govt. To date, i haven't been asked by CRA to present any proof of marriage. Notifying CRA is good enough. No need to send nikah nama copies, unless they ask for it.

I dont know if you guys have heard about Studio Tax. It is a free tax software and what's more it is CRA certified. You download it, plug in the numbers, and file the tax yourself. It is quite simple really. There is a limit of filing 20 individual taxes in a year.

At the end you may want to donate money the BHOK Consulting for providing this free service. I have used the software for the past four years. Have no complaints/issues. Here is the link if you are interested in exploring it further:

like i said above, if you make money in canada, your spousal and dependent claim will be reduced with the amount of income that is under 10527 or sth . n 8503 for provincial(ontario) of your spouse worldwide income. so it'll be like u have a base amount 10527 tax free of your own if you support a low income or no income spouse you'll increase your base amount with the same amount i.e you'll get almost 21000 tax free which will be offset against your taxable income in return reducing your tax or generating a refund. That is why they ask for their worldwide income. As a spouse, his or her money is your money too. It's a good way to track your finances or an incentive to declares their income. Like they don't want your spouse to make millions and not know about it. Incase you get in trouble with the law they'll go after your spouse.
