Hello,

I have a question. I was wondering if I can I sponsor my sister. I just saw in cic website that it is possible to sponsor one relative regardless of age/relations only if I don't have anybody (spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings etc) in canada.but in the next point it says that I can't sponsor my brother, sister if they are over 18 yrs of age. Now, my concern is that I don't have anybody in canada and I meet the financial requirement to sponsor her too but she is over 18yrs. Now I'm confused that if I am actually eligible to sponsor her or not.

I will truly appreciate your feedbacks.

Thank you.

Are your parents still alive?

Yes, they are alive.

Unfortunately that means you can't sponsor your sister.

If your parents were no longer alive and you had no partner/spouse or children - then you would qualify to sponsor your sister.

Oh no really! But where does it say? They have three points in their website under "you can sponsor". Those are-
1. Brother or sisters, nephews or nieces, grand children who are orphaned, under 18 yrs of age and not married.
2. Another relative of any age or relationship but only under specific conditions: the conditions are mainly that I can't have any relatives in canada
3. Accompanying relatives of the above

So just wondering why can't I apply for my sister under the second condition? And also please let me know where did u see that I can't apply for my sister if my parents are alive.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Tc

Here's the exact quote from the CIC site. I've bolded the part that's specific to you.

Note: you can sponsor one relative regardless of age or relationship only if you do not have a living spouse or common-law partner, conjugal partner, a son or daughter, parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece who could be sponsored as a member of the family class, and you do not have any relative who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.

Since your parents are living, you do in fact have parents you could sponsor and therefore can't sponsor anyone else in your family.

Under point #2 in your post - there are actually two conditions: (1) there's no one else you can sponsor who is outside of Canada; (2) you don't have any relatives in Canada. You are fine for #2. However you don't fulfill the criteria for #1 since your parents are still alive.

Thanks for your info but I'm still confused because it's not said any where that I have to sponsor my parents if they are alive and secondly the parent's sponsor process is currently off so I can't sponsor them anyways so I should be able to sponsor somebody else other than my parents :S. Anyways, thanks a lot once again for youe reply. I will try to find more info. If you get to know anything else please let me know.

Thanks.

It's not that you have to sponsor your parents, it's that as long as they're alive you can't sponsor another relative ahead of them, even if they don't want to be sponsored or you don't plan to sponsor them because there is a bar on it. The "any relative" rule is for those in extreme situations with no other relative or family except for the one they want to sponsor.

You guys are probably right but I'm just getting confused with the thing that i can't apply for my sibling while my parents are alive because it doesn't clearly say anywhere. This is just so weird because right now they don't accpet sponsor application for parents and I can't apply for 'any relative' while my parents are alive. So basically I can't apply for anybody in my family. This rules just not making any sense :(

Actually, it does say so quite clearly in the quotation scylla posted:

"Note: you can sponsor one relative regardless of age or relationship only if you do not have a living spouse or common-law partner, conjugal partner, a son or daughter, parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece who could be sponsored as a member of the family class..."

See the ONLY IF part? That is the part that clearly says that since your parents are alive, you can't sponsor your sister. The operative words are "ONLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE".

You do have living parents, therefore you cannot sponsor your sister.

The words above in red are what most people on this forum will understand from your post. Now, how should we know what to reply?

Being able to sponsor someone is not a freebie you get along with Citizenship or PR. It's a great privilege and NOT a right, and best reserved for your spouse if you had one or ever plan to get one.

The reason is that the government is trying to be kind to any Canadian who has only one close relative left. Maybe because of a war, or natural disaster, or just the vagaries of life. So they let a few people sponsor this one remaining relative. It is not a normal way to sponsor someone; it is more like a humanitarian effort to reunite two people who are almost alone in the world.

oh i am really very sorry..

this is my situation:

i am 31 yr old right now and i was sponsored at the age of 27 of my filipino parents (canadian citizen already) . and im still waiting for the result of my application but still there was no update about my application .my question> ,is that
