Another good argument against 'deporting naturalized citizens' is to 'test them through Canadian court and rehabilitation system'. This was from Barbara, the CBA vice chair

Watching the session you can tell this bill will see the light very soon, even the cons are not giving valid points for not having it passes

And the professor from UoT is also dont think deporting would solve the problem...moreover, discrimination with 2 classes of citizens.

The committee has one more meeting tomorrow.If no amendments are suggested ,then I believe there will one more meeting maximum.So how do you think that will meeting will be close 22 March because according to me that seems a bit far.Dont want to sound over optimistic but if all goes well they should wrap up the bill in committee stage by first week of March.

Permanent residents are required to pay taxes at the same level as Canadian citizens while being entitled to less rights. It's would be fair to compensate the permanent residents for this inequality by keeping the citizenship application fees low or free.

I don't see the sense in your argument. Should PR's pay less for other government services as well then? Should they be entitled to discounts on renewing their car registration or property taxes since they have less rights than citizens?

Yes..... Majority seems to be in favor of C-6. From conservatives, Linda tried to raise objections but they are dealt with appropriately.

Summary of meeting - depositions by:

- Members of the Canadian BAR
- A law prof from UofT
- A member of the Canadian Jewish and Isreal Congress

Looks to me like this bill is gonna move forward BUT we will have an amendment to allow for citizenship revocation hearings.

This is probably to cover Minister Monsef - but it means more delays for us - but the senate proceedings should get over with soon by the looks of things.

Can anyone tell me what happened today?

Arguments by Canadian Lawyers Association (federal and Quebec) before the committee. Then there was an individual representation from the Law professor of University of Toronto and another independent lawyer. Tomorrow is the second session on this bill so perhaps tomorrow we will see some concrete update in terms of fate of this bill.

From the discussions, I think appeal process in case of revocation will be appropriately reflected into the C-6 bill. The amendment may at least be to restore previous process (3 layers i.e. application to immigration minister, review by immigration minister and referral to Federal court, and federal court deciding the case) or even go beyond it to cover up any loopholes in previous process. Just my thoughts.

Probably a silly question: Why is there a discussion about allowing proper hearing before the citizenship is revoked when the bill itself is essentially about doing away with the ability to revoke someone's citizenship. Can someone shed some light on this?

I realize 600 can be a lot to spare - especially if you have 5-6 members in your family.

BUT people are missing the point. If it means your application gets processed faster and you get certainty of the Canadian citizenship - can you really put a price tag on that?

I started from the bottom - I came to Canada as an international student - was broke most of the time. Today I am in the highest income tax bracket. I dont say this to brag but to say that Canada provides me opportunities which I wouldn't have otherwise had. If I can work my way up from the bottom to the top SO CAN YOU.

If anything I am happy if this fee prohibits leeches from applying to citizenship - they dont appriciate what you are getting and want freebies. Now for those who genuinely cant afford it - concessions should be made (disabilities etc).

Finally I hear a LOT of people complaining that they had to wait an extra year. Yes that sucks - but if you really want to be in Canada - it shouldnt matter anyway.

Your PR card allows you everything a citizen has minus the passport or voting rights - which you will get in 1 more year.

I have been patiently waiting for 15 years till the day I can apply. Under the current laws I still have one more year to go - but ultimately I am just thankful to be here. We could have it much much much worse - and we all know that.

Just live life and be happy. Talk to your senators. And dont b*tch so much.
