They should push to return it to the HoC by April 10 while the HoC would take a day or two to return it back to the Senate by April 13 so it gets Royal assent on the same day or in April. Otherwise, Royal assent is likely in May!_MK_ said:Finally they voted.
According to Senator Omidvar, they will push to vote on it by April 13th.
Is that senator free to decide when to debate? or they can stand and vote again to debate?spyfy said:Summary: This is what happened today on Tuesday, April 4
They were almost about to get to that vote, too. But then a Senator (whose name I didn't catch) asked that debate be adjourned in her name (since she wants to talk on this bill). She said she will talk "later this week or early next week".
Once this debate is over (maybe it's just her who wants to speak, maybe there is others, too), they will have the actual vote on the third reading of bill C-6. If the bill passes that stage, note that the bill will then go back to the House of Commons since it has been amended. The HoC then has to have a final vote on the bill.
Conditioning that no further amendments are to be introduced by Tories, fingers crossed!spyfy said:Summary: This is what happened today on Tuesday, April 4
As mentioned earlier, there were three votes before the Senate:
1. The motion that C-6 is read the third time (and therefore passes the Senate)
2. The motion to amend C-6 (appeals process)
3. A new motion to change the amendment: replace "written notice by the minister" into "notice by the minister".
Vote on no. 3 was postponed from last Thursday until Tuesday today.
Today, as scheduled, at 5:30 pm the Senate voted on no. 3. This subamendment was defeated 44 to 33 with 6 abstentions.
Then, right after, they had a name call vote for the actual amendment. That is item no. 2 above. That motion carried with 50 for and 33 against.
This means the bill has passed the latter two of the questions above.
This means the bill has to pass only one more vote, the vote on the actual third reading.

If the HoC agrees with the amendments, the bill does NOT need to go back to the Senate. It'll go directly to the Governor-General for royal assent.spiritsoul said:They should push to return it to the HoC by April 10 while the HoC would take a day or two to return it back to the Senate by April 13 so it gets Royal assent on the same day or in April. Technically she could hold the debate for long, however she herself said "I will talk later this week or early next week" and I guess she meant that.monalisa said:Is that senator free to decide when to debate? or they can stand and vote again to debate?
Indeed, fingers crossed on that.spiritsoul said:Conditioning that no further amendments are to be introduced by Tories, fingers crossed!
spyfy Said one amendment did not pass?!_MK_ said:Finally they voted.
The amendment passed.
Next steps:
Debate on entire C6. We should expect several adjournments.
Vote on bill. According to Senator Omidvar, they will push to vote on it by April 13th.
The bill is then supposed to go back to HoC. It should not too long there. Likely several weeks. Looks like there is a high likelihood of bill becoming law in May/early June.
The subamendment to replace "Written notice" by "notice" didn't pass. But that amendment was just a delay tactic by the Conservative Senators. So that's a thing of the past now.Whocares said:spyfy Said one amendment did not pass?!
Thank you so much. I like this thread. So clear, to the point and informative.spyfy said:The subamendment to replace "Written notice" by "notice" didn't pass. But that amendment was just a delay tactic by the Conservative Senators. So that's a thing of the past now.
You're welcome. I'm also happy that we can keep it to the facts over here. Quite refreshing. Let's keep it up!Whocares said:Thank you so much. I like this thread. So clear, to the point and informative.
Agree. The HoC goes for 2 weeks a break on April 13spyfy said:If the HoC agrees with the amendments, the bill does NOT need to go back to the Senate. It'll go directly to the Governor-General for royal assent.
