Anya that is true and I have no doubt that this bill will cause problems for some genuine people who want to make Canada their home.

How will this bill cause problems for such people? If you want to make Canada home, this bill doesn't affect you at all.

What if you want to make Canada your home indefinitely but also retain the right of all citizens to move elsewhere in the future? No one (myself included) knows how CIC will ever enforce an Intent to Reside case, and no one knows how you could prove such "intent" at the time of signing, especially when the prosecution of such a claim would likely come some time afterwards.

If I get better opportunity in the future outside Canada does it mean cheating Canada ?
If I want to send my son to study in better university overseas does it mean cheating Canada ?
If I want to spend my retirement time outside Canada does it mean cheating Canada ?
If I want to open a business overseas does it mean cheating Canada ?
If some one (by mistake ) accuse me as a terrorist because of my name or using old system in the airport ( its a common in the third word countries ) does it mean cheating Canada ?

Because in Home when you make two class of people living, there is always a rift. It is not matter of bill it will matter of different treatment to different class of people. I just want to tell you it will not stop here.

This law will set stone in future "Show me the person and I will show you the Rule"

If Canadians just sit silent and let this happen, the passiveness and smugness of the place will just be too much to take...

All those PEtitions and stuff...something more and dramatic has to happen ! This is like a dictatorship..and they criticize foreign govts for being dictators and withholding freedom of speech...YIKES ...such disgusting double standards...I want to puke... I really do ! >:( >:(

us2yow, you are getting better by the minute :).

More C-24 debate today at 3:00 in the House. Apparently they will vote on Lysane's amendment (I believe the amendment is to actually count pre-PR time).

http://www.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?pub=projected&language=E

Wait...so its a vote JUST ON Lysane's pre-PR related Amendment but not the whole dictionary of an Omni-bus C-24 bill ?

I guarantee you ..you will get a headache trying to read the confusing language in the original C-24 Bill (not Lysane's amendment..just to clarify..she's an angel as far as we are concerned and to be treated with the utmost respect...kudos...)

...can someone confirm that the Govt's bill C-24 is in English ? LOL ;D

My understanding is they vote on the amendment first, and then on the Bill itself. It also says to that effect in this article:
http://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/news/national/alexander-blasts-critics-of-immigration-bill-as-c-24-goes-to-second-reading-1.1078205

The Minister's fave organization, the Bar, said that the Bill was nearly incoherent, and that it was in everybody's interest that basic legislative drafting principles are used (they really embarrassed him there, no wonder he hates them now). But then ordinary people would actually be able to understand what is going on here.

FYI, Supreme Court's reviewing time frame is usually about 1.5 - 2 years right now. And that is not counting the lower courts.

When they pressed the delete button on the 300,000 applications in 2012 (submitted in 2008 and before I believe), the people went to the court. The Federal Court dismissed it, and now the case is before the Federal Court of Appeal. If the courts do anything, it might be too late for us to actually count.

If all the petitions are treated like garbages. I think we should create one big petition aiming at 100k signatures to call Chris Alexander to resign. That won't change the policy under Cons but at least will be a slap on their face.

Alexander accused of sedition (one of the better speeches):

Based on the comments in Parliament, I think it's clear that the intent to reside clause applies only to PR's and not to citizens. So, citizens can move wherever they want, whenever they want. As for speculating about what the CIC may or may not do in the future, it's futile.

This whole "two class" argument is way overblown. If you are really concerned about it, you have two options:
1) Don't commit any acts of "terrorism, espionage, and other grave forms of disloyalty"; or
2) Give up your other citizenship.

Problem solved.

It's not like there will be two separate types of passports or anything else to identify someone as a citizen by birth vs. a naturalized citizen.
