how long is this process now ????
about another 4 to 9months for you, maybe sooner! The easy part is over, now you just have to be patient and play the CIC'S waiting game!

hi everybody,

this is my first post here and first of all, i´m so glad i found this forum before sending my application it has saved me from a lot of mistake.
i´m dominican living in canada for a year now came with a student-work visa and now i´m remaining as a visitor. i married my husband last september while i was still under a student visa and now we are almost ready to sent it, we are applying outland. and i got some questions, i´d like to know if somebody can help me.

how was your experience with the dominican visa office? how long does it really takes? i know on the website says 14 months but i heard some cases where it takes less, where you call for an interview?

if i can´t prove communication between me and my husband previous the marriage because i didn't have a phone until now, i used to have a work phone while i was working so i texted him through that phone, and he change his phone before we got married, should i write a letter with an explanation?

Becca2013,

Welcome. First of our applications no longer go to Dominican Republic, instead they go to Mexico after first being sent to Mississauga for the Sponsorship portion.

As for the proof of communication, I would send anything that can show you were involved in a relationship. Cards, letters, photos of text messages, emails, ANYTHING...especially if you don't have much for proof of communication because of lack of phones and what not. Also I would explain why you don't have so much.

As for timelines, I don't think any of us really know how long because the applications being process in Mexico is such a new thing. So far there a few of us to hear from mexico. Our initial application dates ranged from December 2014 to June 2015.... Unfortunately this process requires A LOT of patience. Just keep tabs with this site. Also you can join the Dominicano Spouses Facebook group. I find it helpful cause lots gets posted there by past and present applicants.

Good luck!!

sooo you should be near the end soon though, since they requested the medical to be redone?

I ordered notes yesterday just to see what is going on, but I really hope we hear something before the notes come in 30 days!... I wonder if Mexico was being honest when they said they will contact us within 2 months... it's been a month so now I am getting anxious!

I have a friend whose file was supposed to be transferred to Mexico because they applied outland and it was sent to Ottawa instead.. Is that normal? Or some sort of mistake? Maybe cic thinks their application is in land?.. Anybody knows what could possibly happen there

Very odd! Normally only inland applications get sent to Ottawa. It could be a mistake, but given the circumstances surrounding the SD embassy and Mexico maybe Ottawa is accepting some files from the DR to ease the influx of apps Mexico has received. Either way, and just to be on the safe side snd avoid possible delays, I would have your friend call CIC and see what's up, because it could be a mistake or it could be not be.

I will be submitting our application next month if all goes well. My wife is Dominican. I keep reading people referencing "ecas". Could someone please explain what that is. Also, I am in the midst of getting documents translated and certified in the D.R. I know we need the marriage certificate, birth certificate, police clearance letter translated, but what about other documentation like diplomas etc. or let's say letters from the Dominican banks. Should these also be translated and certified? I assume that the medical report would be in English from Santo Domingo.

I also read where the doctors down here are skimming etc lol. I would think it's still alright to use the ones in Santo Domingo that are listed on the CIC website.

Ecas is the online tool that lets you check your application, but it is pretty useless because it is rarely updated!!!

Any document that you are planning to send in with your application, I would have it translated. Better to be safe, and avoid delays in your application.

The medical gets sent electronically, but they give you a receipt page with a picture of the applicant and a number and barcode, that has to be sent in with the application. The medical has to be done with one of the panel physicians listed on the CIC website, I believe there are only 2 and in Santo Domingo.

Thank you sb414 for the quick response. I know what most of you people are going through and I won't have half the stress that most of the applicants have because I am also a legal resident of the D.R. and retired and spend 5 months of the year here, and my wife has a multiple TRV for Canada good for 8 years, and travels frequently to Canada. It's great to see everyone trying to help everyone else out, and for that I am grateful. Good luck to all of you.

sb414 If you are still online, I have a question regarding the local translators. I talked to one and he said he not only does he do the translations but he also is a notary public. I assume that the translator needs someone else to witness his signature and not himself. Am I correct? I am in Santiago and if you or anyone can recommend anyone, I'd appreciate it.
