I had to laugh at that one. Someone asked me, "Well now that you're a Canadian, do you get to keep your Jamaican citizenship?". I explained that I'm not a Canadian, I'm a Jamaican allowed to live in Canada on a permanent basis. She blinked at me, and said "Oh. I thought you got your citizenship!". /facepalm. ::)
Random people who find out I'm sponsoring my husband seem to think the same thing. "Oh so your husband is applying for citizenship. I thought he would get that as soon as he married you" "uh.. no." It's also funny when hubby's family asks about it and say the same thing and I respond with "It's like getting a green card/PR in the US, there's a long process involved." That usually explains it, but some of his family is from the uhh, deep south, and they can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that I'm just Canadian and not American as well since I married hubby and vice versa ::)

I am tired of explaining that to people I know. I feel like a broken record.

I'm tired of hearing "wouldn't it be easier if you just got married?"

Same here - that's what everybody assumes... but that's also because in a lot of european countries, it works like this !

I got tired of hearing, "But now that you're married, aren't you Canadian?"

Most people who don't have to do this themselves have no idea. Heck, I had no idea either!

Thanks. I was however told that it will unlikely be expedited. :(

Where in the oilfields does he work? Russell works in the Kearl Lake project at the moment. Are you living in Fort Mac?
No we live in Grande Prairie. My boyfriend and his uncle just work on local oil and gas leases nearby. He works long hours, but is almost always home at night, so it's worth it. And I'll pray that you and your husband get a miracle so you can get on with your lives. My boyfriend has family in Vancouver and tells me it's gorgeous being right by the ocean. We're hoping to go this summer actually.

This made me laugh. I love how people are all like "oh, did your papers come yet?" And they look at you like it's your fault sometimes as if you're trying to make the process longer so you can just bum around. They so don't get it!
Ugh you have no idea. His mom and grandmother are the worst. Every week his mom asks me "so are you done with that permanent residency thing again? Remind me why you can't work?" Oh and my favourite which is "well I know of a great online college program you can take. It's only $10,000." I mean my boyfriend makes pretty decent money, but we don't have $10,000 to throw at going to school right now. And when I say I can't work or can't go to school, I get the "oh you are just being lazy" look. Argh!

Valentine's Day
I heard the birthday cheer so had to peep my head in! Happy Birthday Bagel Bagel!!!

My coworkers are always like, is your hubby here yet???

Umm no........... If he was, you'd all be the first to know..........

Oh when is he coming?? He should come up here to visit but we can understand why you'd rather visit him since he lives on a tropical island. winks and grins teeth. When is immigration going to approve? :-\

(I'm thinking, I just explained the process just last month. He lives in a non visa exempt country and cannot leave until the application is approved)

I got this so much. People just dont seem to get that it's a long and lengthy process. Everytime I would talk to in-laws or family members it was "So when are you done with that immigration stuff?" and all I could say was "I dont really know. no one does." they just give me this lost look and talk about something else. I was so tired of thinking about Immigration, let alone talking about it.

I'm at the point where I think I'm going to just outright ignore the subject when they bring it up or say I don't feel like talking about it.

Uh......... so?

The southerners all also seem to think Canada is some giant death trap with Yetis, sled dogs, and Igloos....... :D

I am grateful to sit here and answer messages and look out my windows at English Bay. It is wonderful looking out at the ocean. Maybe when we win Lotto Max we can get a place where we can see English Bay and Cypress Mountain both.

Same here! :) living on Vancouver Island, pretty nice I must say! I just got my PR approved so I don't have to explain anymore, but I must say I have been lucky - my partner's parents were super nice and understanding, they knew that I was waiting and willing to work, but just couldn't... and kept on telling me how much it must be difficult for me to wait, and that they were happy that I choose Canada (so their son could be close to them!), and that they hoped their government would welcome me very soon! :) so can't really complain... his grand parents wouldn't really get it (they kept saying - well you're from Europe, and you're educated, so of course you can work... well no!), but well... for the rest it has been quite nice...
Now I'm a PR - and so I'm officially unemployed! :) I'll see how long it lasts before people start calling me lazy... :)
