hi CarribRN,

thanks for ur inputs.really appreciate it.any territory you can suggest for me to avoid the SEC assessment.though im preparing myself for it, i want to know other options as well.only got a year of bedside nursing before i started teaching.

someone told me that if i fail SEC assessment, i can sit for LPN licensure instead.work as an LPN, gain experience, apply for assessment again, if eligible having enough bedside experience, apply for CRNE after.how true is this?

thanks..

If I am not mistaken the only provinces with SEC are BC and Alberta. The other provinces has competency equivalency tool also but are done by written Q&A only, essay format like the one from Ontario.

Yes, it is true that if you do not pass the SEC you can apply as an LPN instead. This is what most of the nurses from the Phils are doing. They do this so they can work and earn money and do the bridging program to become an RN at the same time.

btw.. I thought sharing this e-mail based conversation with CNO - Canadian Nursing association of Ontario will be helpful to you..

me : I just want to know that to apply for registration should I first be a Permanent resident of Canada ? Is it a mandatery requirment?

CNO :You are required to have immigration authority to work in Canada to become registered.

me: Or I can start my process of registration while I am currently in my home country before landing in Toronto - Canada ?

CNO:Yes, you may apply for assessment before you come to Canada.

As per my understanding assessment and registration are 2 different process. In Ontario, and even in other provinces assessment can be done thru the internet for a fee, even before landing, this assessment is a pre requisite for registration. This will determine the equivalence of your education from your home country with Canadian standards. But to register, another requirement is to be a landed immigrant, and in this, different provinces has different regulations. In Manitoba, you can do the registration before landing but in Ontario you need to be a landed immigrant to qualify for registration. Licensing is the third thing to be done. You have to pass the CRNE to get the license as a RN. Another requirement to qualify for CRNE is Canadian experience, to sum it up the process would be:

Ontario (applicant from Phlippines)
1. Assessment
2. PR and landing
3. bridging program (further studies required if aim for RN otherwise go for LPN no need for further studies)
4. Registration
5. Work in Canada for at least a year full time
6. sit for CRNE
7. Congrats your a RN if you pass the exam

Manitoba (applicant form Philippines)
1. Assessment
2. Registration (nursing RN in Philippines and vast working experience outside Canada are your only tickets for registration)
3. PR and landing
4 Work for 6 months (at this stage you are qualified to work and employers are hiring you because you are already registered.
5. Sit for CRNE
6.Congrats, your a RN if you pass the exam.

If the process is not as I mentioned above, please correct me...

got it aspire, i am having the same understanding as yours.we may begin assessment from our home country in all teritories as well as registration except for Ontario wherein registration requires PR.

btw, uve mentioned that assessment can be done via internet for free.can u share with me a particular website for manitoba?

thanks

aspire,

that's pretty much it to sum it up. However, assessment can't be done online. There are no forms available online that would enable the nursing bodies in Canada assess the applicants eligiblity. Application forms are downloadable to some of the nursing bodies' website though and all these has to be sent to them directly with all the requirements attached to it.

and I think for Ontario it would be (just my thought as this what I am doing now):

1. Assessment
2. PR and landing (i'm not sure about this. If you have a tourist visa you can actually go to Canada to do the bridging program, just need your visa to be converted to student once you are there; Or, you can secure a student visa prior to departure. In my case, this issue was not even brought up )
3. Depends on the outcome of the assessment, you might be asked to do two things.
a. accomplish an equivalency form
b. or register as an LPN

Now, if you choose to challenge them and opt to do the equivalency form and subsequently are able to satisfy them with your answers, they can give you a go signal to sit for the CRNE, pass the exam and be licensed. If not, you might be asked for two things:
a. do a bridging program
b. or register outright as an LPN.

3. bridging program (further studies required if aim for RN otherwise go for LPN no need for further studies). Once you finish this, you'll submit your papers (from the bridging course) again to CNO and get your approval to sit for the CRNE.
4. take the CRNE and be licensed as an RN.

for my dear aspire and CarribRN,

thank you so much for your inputs.really appreciate it.now, im so much enlightened on things i need to do.i have thought of registering for alberta,on another day manitoba and also ontario.now my relatives are calling me and trying to give me some more inputs.now my last, last decision is to take Ontario.

reading both your posts and trying to read info from the package Ontario sent me, the only thing i can do now, while in my home country is to submit papers for assessment.i may not recieve any response from them until I land in Canada and i give them proof of landing.i am preparing myself for the bridging program because i dont have much bedside care to show them.when they decide to place me in bridging program, ill take LPN licensure first, work as an LPN and then take the bridging program at the same time, work for sometime, get necessary experience and when im done with both, take CRNE.

anyone have any idea how much time Ontario will be able to come up with a decision after submission of all documents?

thanks guys!!!

hi guys,

i am so thankful that i am a member of this blog. I am an oncology nurse here in the philippines. I submitted my FSW package last october 2, 2009. I have been working in the hospital for more than 4 years now. I put into my job descriptions for 3152 as follows : 1. identifies and prepare patients who will undergo chemotherapy 2.) Assist oncologist in the administration of appropriate chemotherapy drugs. I just put two of my duties and responsibilities since there is a limited space. Are my job descriptions acceptable for NS to give me the eligibility to pursue my application under FSW?

I need your help on this future RN's.

char_bonel,

Yes, I am. But I am not applying from my home country. I am applying from the Caribbean. Upon the receipt of all your documents, they will advise you to wait for three months to complete their assessment. Once the assessment is completed, they will send the result to you via regular mail, so it will take some time again. In my case, even if we are in the same hemisphere, it still took 3 weeks before their mail correspondence got to me. When I got the result of my assessment, they told me my curriculum is not equivalent to theirs, I was presented two options, apply as an LPN or do the Competency assessment form. I decided to do the competency assessment form. Again, I was given 40days to accomplish this and submit to them additional documents that might support my case to get an approval from them. Once they have received my documents, they told me that my case will be decided on the next board meeting, unfortunately for me, the next board meeting at that time was about a month away (they received my docs end of August and the next board meeting is end of September). Lastly, they told me that once my case is decided at the board meeting, I have to wait for another one month for the result. Up to now, I am still waiting for it. I should receive the result by next week though.

hi carribRN,

im kind of confused about one of the requirements that states we need to give them copy of Proof of Residency.do they mean the PR visa?how did u go about it?would that mean i can also start assessment and be able to recieve result even if i applied from my home country or are the changes took place after u applied and i really need to wait till i land, submit missing requirements before recving result?

thank you for being so nice CarribRN in answering my questions.....

i also attached an extra paper for my main duties to convince them i met all the responsibilities included in the NOC...

i'm pretty sure they won't refuse your application just for that, but next time you submit an application form for the visa office... include as much as possible all, not "verbatim", the duties in the NOC.

By the way I'm an oncology nurse here in the philippines too. and i included in my list all general nursing duties of a nurse.
i submitted mine oct 20.

god bless everyone!
