I would suggest to call the CIC call center and make sure that your marital status is up to date in their system. you can look up their phone number on the website. The call center guy should be able to guide you if it is not updated. (he would probably ask you to email CIC ottawa)

make sure that you sent the email to the correct email address. Also keep the attachments per email to less than 5mb. I would always expect an auto reply back as proof of the delivered email.

If you are travelling, simply tell them that you are travelling and are scheduled to return on a date, and that you can send the passport as soon as you get back.

Reply to the mentioned email informing them about your situation and ask them if you can submit your passport once you get back. Shouldn't be an issue, I think.
