It means that a visa officer has started reviewing your file. He will now determine whether an interview is required or can be waived off during this process. Don't fret about it, most of the applicants have had their interviews waived, hopefully you will have your name in the same list ;)

The visa validity is strictly 1 year from the medicals. This is time bound and they do not grant an extension as per the guidelines (not sure if there are exceptional cases). LVO normally gives 30 days for PPs submission - atleast that's the time I was given. All passports need to be submitted together - so submitting in two different places may not be possible. Hope this helps.
