Students returning to classrooms in Alberta, British Columbia

Students in Alberta and British Columbia are returning to classrooms on Monday after an extended holiday break.

The question of when students should return to class, and under what conditions, has been a subject of debate across the country as provinces and territories shifted plans in the face of the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

Rapid tests and medical-grade masks will be distributed through Alberta schools, provincial officials have said, with all schools expected to have their initial shipment by the end of this week.

"Both rapid tests and masks will be shipped in phases," read a statement issued by the province last week.

Edmonton Public Schools and the Alberta Teachers' Association have expressed concern over the fact that the supplies won't be on hand for everyone immediately, saying that could further exacerbate the lightning spread of Omicron cases.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical health officer, has said returning to in-person learning is important for students' mental wellness.

In British Columbia, Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside has said safety measures will include virtual assemblies, visitor restrictions, staggered break times and access to three-layered masks as schools navigate this wave of COVID-19. School attendance will be monitored and an unusual dip will trigger a response from public health, which may include an investigation, the use of rapid tests or a temporary shift to how students learn, she said.

"To help with effective information-sharing, parents are encouraged to report rapid test results to public health and to ensure they contact the school if their child is staying home because of illness," she said.

Teri Mooring, head of the BC Teachers' Federation, has said she would like to see teachers prioritized for COVID-19 booster shots and N95 masks, which should be available for use in schools. Enhanced masking, using HEPA filters and ensuring teachers have their third shots will support schools in staying open, she said.

The province — which had allowed some children of essential workers and learners with some disabilities back into classrooms last week — has warned there may be functional closures due to staff illness and that COVID-19 exposure notices will no longer be sent unless there are significant dips in attendance.

Health officials in Alberta and British Columbia are expected to provide updated COVID-19 data later Monday.

Question for you guys - How do I reach out to my local MP? What's the best way? I am assuming "Terry Beech" is my local MP for Burnaby.

PEI releases 2022 PNP draw schedule
Prince Edward Island is the only Canadian province to make its PNP schedule public

PEI has released its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw schedule for the rest of the year.

The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) is the only PNP to release its draw schedule ahead of time. The province usually follows this schedule, except in 2020 when the pandemic halted operations around the world.

We can expect 12 PEI PNP draws in 2022. These draws invite immigration candidates who may be eligible for a provincial nomination under one of three categories: Express Entry, Labour Impact and Business Impact.

2022 PEI PNP draw schedule

February 17, 2022
March 17, 2022
April 21, 2022

August 18, 2022
September 15, 2022
October 20, 2022
November 17, 2022
December 15, 2022

In 2021, PEI invited a total of 1,804 immigration candidates to apply for a provincial nomination. Of these invitations, 1,697 were from the Labour Impact and Express Entry streams and 157 were from the Business Impact stream.

About the PEI PNP Express Entry Category
The PEI PNP’s Express Entry Category is an enhanced PNP, which means it is linked with the federal government’s Express Entry system. In order to be considered for this stream, candidates need to have a profile in the system.

Express Entry is an immigration application manager. It handles the applications for three economic-class immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.

Eligible candidates get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for their age, work experience, education, and language proficiency in English or French.

Express Entry candidates who receive a provincial nomination are given an additional 600 points toward their CRS score and are effectively guaranteed an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in a subsequent Express Entry draw.

In order to be considered for a provincial nomination from PEI, Express Entry candidates need to create an Expression of Interest (EOI) profile with the PEI PNP.

EOI profiles are given points based on the province’s unique points grid. The highest-scoring candidates are then invited to apply through monthly draws.

Labour Impact Category
The Labour Impact Category is for foreign nationals who have a valid job offer in PEI, and have support from their employer. It is divided into three streams: Skilled Worker, Critical Worker, and International Graduate.
Candidates in this category must also submit an Expression of Interest in order to be considered for a provincial nomination through the Labour Impact Category.

Business Impact Category
Business Impact Category candidates need to meet the minimum provincial score requirement in order to proceed with their applications. The score is different in every draw. The invitations that the PEI PNP sent in today’s draw were issued under the Work Permit Stream, which is for foreign entrepreneurs who want to own and operate a business on the island.

Found out today (via a response to my email to the Ottawa office) that my primary office has changed from Ottawa to CPC Edmonton. At least there is some movement. Don't know if it correlates across the board, but seems like Ottawa has some life at present.
Can you please share the email address that you got a response from? Thanks!

Hi all, going by the current CRS Distribution in the pool
Would the next draw be 490+ ? Considering the draw size to be 5k.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/submit-profile/rounds-invitations.html

CRS score rangeNumber of candidates
601-1200406
501-6004,947

Are the candidates in 501-600 mostly FSW or do they belong to CEC/PNP?
501-600 is not PNP - for PNP you are getting 600 additional points ;) so it is around 700 minimum I would say :D

True that!

Well if they are mostly FSW, then I guess a lot of people are learning French now.

If they are mostly CEC, that is worrisome.
IRCC could just continue their 'no-draws-2022' strategy of clearing backlogs while the 501-600 range gets piled up by CEC candidates. Once there are 7-8k candidates in that range sometime down the line, they would then conduct a No/all program draw to 'maintain the illusion' of inviting FSW candidates while really all the selected ones would be CEC.

It would be rare for a CEC to be in that score range ;) FSW/FST/CEC draws will not start happening till they will clear the backlog. If they will be clearing around 20k applications a month we are talking March or April for these draws to start happening. PNP draws for now.

I mean I dont see them clearing 20k applications a month. 10 days of Jan are done for and I really dont see any significant moment suggesting that they are even trying to work on the backlog. No Re medicals , A PPR every now and then is still suggesting that they are still in the pandemic mindset. But no draws is good thing for Post AOR people, I mean at-least the backlog isn't increasing. People waiting in the pool is whole different story

I would be careful to say this. Remember we only see a fraction of people on this forum or fb groups ;) I would not make a conclusion based on that.
