why would you get Canada PR being a US Citizen

You asked, so here's my story:

As you guys might guess, I'm an American who is immigrating to Canada because of Trump. On election night in 2016, I decided to emigrate from the US. I can't believe it has been over a year already. I originally wanted to to immigrate to the UK since I have friends there and we actually were joking about how I should leave the US if Trump gets elected, like a Trump refugee. After doing more research on EE and Canada, and hearing about the string of terrorist attacks in the UK early in 2017, I decided in late March of 2017 to immigrate to Canada. You have to live and work in the UK for 5 years before you can apply for permanent residence, so as impatient as we all get with the various delays in the Canadian immigration process, Canada still has the most efficient immigration system with EE that I have seen.

Although my emigration journey started with the presidential election, I have found other personal reasons for immigrating to Canada. Trump's election reflects some deep problems in the US, with racism, sexism and bigotry alive and well here. The white supremacist groups have been emboldened by Trump. His election reflects some legitimate problems of many people who have been neglected for too long. Many working class whites in rural areas and in declining industries have been unemployed and disillusioned for a while, and unfortunately previous governments have not done their part to help these people. They were great targets for a populist like Trump who came along and said he knows what they are going through, and it's not their fault, it's the fault of the immigrants and non whites and ugly women, and he is going to fight for these working class whites and make America great again! So they voted for Trump, the guy who paid attention to them and gave them scapegoats.

There are also too many people here who just don't care. They are busy with their personal lives and don't bother to vote. These people also need to start caring and voting. I have to protest publicly, to do something. My first step is immigrating to Canada.

But worst of all, the US is the only developed country without universal health insurance. You need to be elderly, extremely poor, or working a lot at boring corporate jobs in order to get affordable health insurance. I have been wanting to drop to working only part time in the tech work and focusing on my performing arts career which has taken a remote backseat, but I have been too worried about losing health insurance, so I had been unhappily tolerating my day job with long hours and boring work and corporate politics, etc. for many years.

I am very unhappy here and can't wait to move to Canada. Canada will be the best place for me to pursue my long term goals.

To add on to @trumprefugee , there are far too many people who will continue to vote for Trump and others like him simply because he's a Republican and they'll vote for whoever is regardless of anything else about them (or even their own beliefs - I know someone with mostly liberal beliefs if they actually discuss them who almost always votes for the Republican because they see themselves as a conservative so that's what they do, end of story). And just yesterday, a young person in my family posted a "thank goodness Hillary's not president" post. It's hard to see things turning around reasonably soon when so many people are caught up in such thinking.

I've posted my reasons before but I believe I posted them in our old insurance year, where our deductible and max out of pocket were lower (4k max OOP per person, $13,300 for the family). For this year, the insurance through my husband's job cost us $500 each month for the privilege of having a deductible of $6250 per person and max out of pocket of $6650 per person (max $13,300 for the family). For any emergency, surgery, childbirth, etc falling over Dec 31/Jan 1, you can double that because each plan year would be separate. He was an engineer of many years at a stable if small company. I will have to pay out of pocket to see a doctor here for a medication refill next month (no OHIP until June 1, temp insurance only covers illnesses and emergencies). Telling a Canadian friend about that this weekend, she said the $70-100 I expected to pay here was a lot. For me that's normal if not low. Only well-child and annual exams were covered in full with our insurance in the US, otherwise it was at least $100 per visit. More for specialists. Thankfully we have the savings to manage those costs, to an extent, but we have no idea how our daughter would have afforded that when she got older.

Oh, the Canadian friend also said how you have to pay for ambulances, about $100. In the US that would be at least 1 or 2 thousand! We have to shift our thinking now to where we can actually just call an ambulance if we're hurt or ill and unsure of what care we need vs only considering that if one of us was basically dying. It's a bizarre feeling suddenly knowing we won't have to carefully consider how ill or hurt we might be before calling 911!

I had a brief hospital trip about a decade ago. Weeks later, I saw the ambulance bill-- nearly $6,000. I have wondered why anyone would actively choose to take an ambulance in the US since then.

I'm applying for PR for a few reasons. Primarily, I'm dating a Canadian guy and we'd like to close the distance without being forced into marriage. The rest of my reasons are basically as @moose17 and @trumprefugee described-- the political climate is becoming aggressively radicalized and the health care system has gotten to the point where most people would rather die than be resuscitated and burden their family with tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. They say in America you can make it big, but it can break you, too. Don't be fooled by the glamorous image of the "American dream."

Up to 15 years huh ... I have been living in New York state for the past 16+ years, so my NY record should give me that. Hopefully that all will be enough. Before that, I had moved states every few years.

Just to clarify, the 15 was the time on my PA record. She said I would need to get my previous state's records for more. All I could think was, why?

That was pretty much how I felt about getting my Missouri records. I had 9 years through Indiana and most insurance companies seemed to have 10 years as a common length of time they were interested in. I couldn't imagine the difference of a few extra years over that was that significant. MO wanted a notarized form sent in to get anything with personal info, and I'm sure they wouldn't have sent it to Canada. No thanks!

BTW, I really recommend checking with a broker or two for car insurance. We used a local one we found on the Traveler's Insurance website and then checked with iSure to be extra thorough before committing, and iSure got an even better rate. Either way, MUCH better than contacting separate companies. Kanetix also gets recommended but coming from the US, the questions were a pain and not very accurate to the final, actual quotes we got. Overall the increase in insurance rates is a bit painful, but at least we got to shop around relatively easily and the insurance here does cover a lot more. We'll also get a small discount once we get winter tires.

Can anyone let me know experience of getting PCC from Indian Consulate NY? I mean how many days it take to get PCC for passport issued in India? Also will they keep passport with them till I get PCC or I just need to show on the day I apply?

They have a same day service. I got mine within a few hours.

Possible if your passport was renewed recently (in last 2-3 years) and police verification is up to date in their system.

Yes! I got my passport renewed here and my old one had been verified in Delhi several years ago so I had no trouble in getting my PCC on the same day. My husband, on the other hand, had to get a new PCC from the Delhi Police emailed to him and only then was the clearance certificate from the Indian consulate provided to him. Go to the Indian consulate around 9 am and ask them for instructions.

The consulate does email Delhi Police but if we're being serious here, do you expect them to reply asap Nope! We took matters in our own hands; applied online on the Delhi Police website for them to do complete a police verification (they have a 7-day guarantee). They did show up to my husband's home (after calling and confirming with my father in law) that he would be there. They arrive, checked my husband's documents like adhaar card, etc. and left. They emailed the PCC to us on the same day but of course there was an error in the dates! We got that fixed and submitted it to both the Indian consulate in NYC and online to CIC when we completed our express entry application. We got the PPR based on the police certificate that was issued to us by the Delhi Police. We did also end up getting the PCC from the Indian consulate in NYC the day after we provided them the police verification letter from Delhi Police but by then we didn't need it.
