I made more teaching than 110/hr CDN. But I would prefer to die the most painful, of painful deaths than teach ever, ever again. I was shot an opportunity from Bermuda to work for $150USD/hr....but they didn't like the idea of me being married (????). To put into scale, It may be a little more than now, but when you factor in the rest of the costs, it almost feels lateral.

I am waiting to hear back regarding that question... but that would constitute a daily commute into the heart of Toronto every day... that's terrible :(.
110 an hour teaching?!?!

Did you ever see the Tracey Ulman show? I used to sneak up late nights when my dad would be asleep on the couch, and my mom off at school to watch it. That's where the Simpsons got their start.. in very short segments.. I distinctly remember the very first skit.... boy did I catch hell for that one :).

Truth be told: I don't have a Doctorate. Hell, I don't even have a Bachelors ;). I have met many a PhD in my chosen field. And I hold my own with them. I get the old, "Piled High and Deep" explanation of what a PhD is... Wife wanted me to stay at Laurier to finish schooling (for free).... but.... satellites!

I am reasonably happy as well. My only goal now, is retiring comfortably. Paying down/off a mortgage within a year or two, would go a loooong way to that goal.
Never saw that show, unfortunately. Some of my friends, to kid me, used to tell me that PhD stands for Permanent Head Damage.... cause you need to be a bit crazy to do one ;)

@sylvain1... the calendar got away from me! I forgot you have a sweet weekend coming!

Now, tell your wife to pack extra underpants... lmao! My wife lost her mind going to the immigration office. Refused to even talk to me. I guess she was thinking they were about to deport her. But, then again, she didn't listen to me. I told her, it's done. Process over. You win.

#NeversBelievesMe.
She is actually cool about it. I'm the more excited one that it's finally coming to the end! We will go to Montreal Thursday evening. I didn't like the idea of leaving at 6 am Friday and get stack in traffic to enter Montreal island, and then to rush trying to find a parking... no additional stress needed for that day! So we booked a hotel at a walking distance from CIC office.

It worked out to more like $160CDN/hr on paper (if memory serves), but you are not paid for out of classroom time. And you have to prepare, answer emails, do marking, etc.. It really wasn't that great..

In IT, that's the rate in Cayman/BVI/Bermuda. No joke. You are contracted. They house you, etc. But unless you marry a local, you cannot stay indefinitely. So, the scheme is: you go there, don't pay any housing or food costs, make tons of money on the financial services places that operate there for a couple years, then get out.

Early in my career, I acquired a bunch of experience in Customer Relation Management software....apparently they like to keep track of who's money they are laundering. While other IT jobs are usually 110-130USD/hr, they were willing to pay more for the SR level developer on those systems...

If you don't believe me, look for CML or other IT recruiting agencies in Cayman/Bermuda.

Yeah that's a new one :). I thought about doing it. With the paperwork I have, I can complete a BSc in 8 months, then continue. But I am older now, and frankly, in my industry they only use the paper to get new grads in the door. Once you have experience, that goes out the window.

One of my friends and former colleague has a PhD from UWaterloo in CS (Computational Linguistics). He told me that if hadn't have known what paperwork I did have, he would have suspected I came from the same program. Turns out, he immigrated from Peru to USA (attended Texas A&M) then married his wife and came to Canada!

That's actually a good plan. Here is to hoping there is no troubles, and it all goes off as planned!

Whenever we would go to NB (driving), we would leave here around 11pm. By 5am you are in MTL. Our ultimate destination was usually just between Frederickton and Moncton (if you know CFB's, we would be very close to CFB Gagetown). Usually, we'd get there about 3-4pm.

It has to come soon! I'll tell them on Friday: hey, please send Browning her DM! She's been waiting for long enough now!

Thanks Sylvain. Friday will be Sweet for you and the Mrs. Plus you’re spending the night at a hotel close to the IRCC landing office. You can just stroll over in your jammies.

If it's not here by friday, I will be hacking (the html, and screen-shotting) to make the internet give up the goods...

Tell them the Profilers might do a driveby. LOL

LOL. My husband thinks he is done already. I keep telling him "Baby we do not have DM yet. Stop saying we are done." I can just imagine how he will be at the landing appointment.

He has ten siblings and they all citizens (except one) and I think the process was different when they did it. So now he is telling them he is done.

if you ever have to do that trip again, you can now use the highway 30 to avoid Montreal. There is a relatively new bridge (about 5 years old), there is a toll fee, but as far as I remember, it is less than 2$ and it is totally worth to avoid the traffic jams on the island!

Good to know! We always took the bridge, because my mom is claustrophobic. So, the tunnel she would stop breathing...

Actually, it's not terrible TBH. If you evaluate against other G7's, look at their social programs funded by tax vs. their taxation, and factor in the population. Simple fact is, we are actually on par. Sure american's "pay" less, but they get far less, and they actually are being conned out of WAY more. That's an example. France pays more in income tax -- but has doctors come to your home, and has a bunch other social programs we don't.

Totally on par. *shrug* $0.05.
I agree Canadians get way more.

I just don't get it with them. One of the richest nations on earth has to have a debate on why their people should have universal health care. SMH. Because of Obamacare the normal working class now know what is like to have health care and do not want to give it up. I hope all those Republicans running in 2018 lose their seats. I sometimes wonder why Obama's people did not come to Canada and replicate our health care system.

It's cute when they are wrong :). BUT, a DM is actually coming. It's just a matter of when. And BTW -- I hate to be *THAT* guy, but I told-a-so. Your forms that needed correcting didn't slow you down, at all :).

Close enough. My wife treats her PR like citizenship. She isn't interested (yet) in politics, or holding a Canadian political office (or high-security job). So, in the absence of those things (and the passport -- which she does want), she can do most everything else.

There was a massive propaganda machine at work in the 1960's. They would come to your house for "listening" parties (listening to a record). You would "learn" about how BAAAAD socialism is. It's a commie Soviet thing. And the Soviets are BAAAD. So, immediately, when you talk about socializing something, they get worked up. We've even been referred to, in the same vein, as "communists" because we have socialized medicine..

Until they learn different, they will continue this way, unfortunately. That propaganda was pretty strong...

Actually, HRC did a tour of nations years ago. She wanted to understand how other nations did socialized medicine. She wanted to bring it back to the USA. The people, however, refused to accept the idea that they would be paying to help someone else who needed help. It's their money, and they thought they should only spend it on themselves.
