Death of a family member.

Hi all!

I have filed for a renewal for my expired PR Card last month. Just a few days ago, my father in law died so I need to leave canada but go back in quickly.

Does my in law's death count as a valid reason for express processing for the death of a family member rule? I only see immediate blood relatives when I look up what constitutes immediate family member.

Thanks!

You can certainly try. Note that you don't need a valid PR card to leave Canada.

As mentioned, you do not need a valid PR Card to exit Canada. If you do not receive your renewed card (or a PRTD) you can re-enter Canada at a land PoE since a valid PR Card is only required if returning via a commercial carrier (not required for a U.S. citizen with a valid passport). You could enter on foot or in a private vehicle as a last resort.

I will be travelling to Asia so I have to go through a commercial flight.

Sorry for your loss.

If you have a passport/visa that allows you to enter USA, you can cross at a land border by flying to somewhere in USA/at border (eg Seattle, Detroit, Buffalo, etc).

If you don't have that, you are stuck with the PR/PRTD processes. You can of course ask for urgent PR/PRTD processing. Unfortunately the track record for that is uncertain and no-one here can tell you how long it may take. It may take longer than you are comfortable with for job/life reasons.

Sorry for your loss.

Sharing personal experiences:
I had applied for PRTD while I was in India 2 years ago, as I had misplaced my PR card and my travel was scheduled in 3 months. They approved and asked to submit passport within 14 days. Took another 5-7 days for passport to get stamped.

Recently, due to work related situation, I submitted urgency request and they approved my request within 3 days of submitting all the valid documents and has issued my PR card.

I am not in any position to give professional advise, but given your circumstances even more unfortunate and seems a valid reason than I have had, I am entirely sure the request will be approved pretty quickly.

I'm most probably stuck doing the last but and waiting.

Do you know if IIRC notifies me if the are treating my renewal as urgent?

Thanks! This is giving me some hope. When you submitted an urgency request, did they notify you?

I submitted a normal pr renewal application 2 weeks ago but am trying to mark it as urgent.

My understanding is not really, you just may get the PR card sooner. I don't know for sure though. There was some case recently here in this forum but i don't recall where.

Should note: if you are in compliance with the RO and everything else in order, it MIGHT get done quicker than if you ask for urgent treatment (somebody would have to read the urgent request and make a decision; straightforward renewal apps often get done by automated review and can take only a few weeks, I think).

My background: I did not meet the RO, so my application was not being considered for normal processing times. It took approx 75 days and there was no progress.
I had to travel to the US for business purposes, for which I notified IRCC via webform couple of times, but that was not considered, because they need the supporting documents according to their criteria.

I provided with the documents, and one key document was missing, so they responded in 24 business hours. I submitted it, and they emailed me with approval within 48 hrs or so.

Meanwhile, I could not link my application to gckey, so I was stuck with only getting information whenever I contact them. The intermediary option of checking via inspect tools was of no help as the status never changed there. But, I got the automated email stating the request was sent.

Unfortunately, IRCC agents do not have any information or access to whether the requests is approved or rejected, so you don't get any updates from them, until IRCC officers change the status in the backend. In my case, they never were able to tell me if the request was approved or not. They won't be able to tell you anything regards to status of application more than what you see on gckey or perhaps find out using the automated system.

All other webform queries take a day to 15 days in some cases. But, if you submit urgency request with all the required documents, they respond pretty quickly(from my experience!).

Marking your application for urgent won't harm at all. Though it is at the discretion of the officer whether to approve the application or not.
