How long have you lived in Richmond? Chinese run a parallel "Canada" there complete with banks, jobs, services, news papers, "public" housing, "taxes" and "police" and what not.
No wonder during my last Vancouver trip, I felt as if I was in Beijing or Seoul. Before travel a lot of Air BnB hosts in Richmond kept rejecting me giving weird reasons like repairs or sudden friends bla..bla.., now if I think of it even short term rentals I think they give only to their own elk. Lucky for me finally a guy with a Jewish sounding name rented his place to me, it was a little pumped up price though, after 4-5 rejections I paid the premium.

Also while visiting I found all tourist spots, parks, those rope bridges all filled with Asian folks, funnily even some school trips was 100% all Asian kids (no Indian or Arabic or even south east Asian, but all Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc.. )

My point was that a lot many things about Chinese Students remain hidden because they work in their own bubble. they have their own debt system, their own "banks" to transfer money, their own "jobs" which are not advertised anywhere but in their own "news papers".

I do believe that without students, housing, education and at least 3 other billion dollar industries would be at risk.

At the end of the day, Canadians don't innovate they are overinvested into things that are primarily fueled by students. A leveraged industry can only perform if the need exist(e.g. oil) - Canada is overinvested into something that's going downhill.

Student numbers are already down(80% reduction), the backlash had nothing to do with it.
And this is one of the fixes for that. Businesses won’t innovate or invest if they’ve given access to an endless supply of a temporary underclass of low wage workers. Cut down that supply and viola, they have to either shut down or look for alternatives/solutions. A healthy economy involves the failure of unproductive businesses.

Looks like this is happening in many universities:

https://www.sfu.ca/human-resources/managers-supervisors/hiring-freeze-faqs.html

SFU currently faces a financial shortfall in the 2023/24 fiscal year due to lower international enrollments and increased cost pressures. We expect that SFU's budget is likely to remain tight over the next few years.

I have read the same thing about McGill, Queens, not sure how many more are there.
Considering recent events, I truly believe that this is a good thing. Western universities have turned out to be garbage! You have Ivy League universities in the US and the top institutions in Canada openly promoting antisemitism. What sort of “education” are people actually gaining in these institutions? To hate Jews? What is Canada actually losing when these institutions fail.

There's also a concern that lack of students could cause a recession in Canada.

Please don't tell me you actually believe this nonsense. There is a recession in Canada with or without these students. Note sure why Indians think their 16K tuition at Conestoga and a part time job at Tim Horton's will change Canada's economy lmfao. Btw, student numbers SHOULD be coming down based on the huge public backlash against diploma mills taking in every unqualified student.

Correlation is not causation.
This is the justification used by some Indians. You will be surprised. They would say, “Without us Indians, Canada won’t survive and the country needs us. The economy will collapse”. Between 2008 and 2014, Indians were not even the top source of immigrants and neither were Indian students the largest source of international students. What happened then I wonder? Was Canada collapsing?

Canada of early 2010s was very different from what it is right now. Way too much debt has been taken in assuming this inflow. That's where we say "without immigrants" (not without "Indians"), Canada will go into a recession given where we are at right now.

I agree! This stupidity is spreading far enough that even some techies making $200k/yr are quitting their FT jobs to be real estate flippers. This is wasting Canada's potential in every possible sense. They can go and open a LMIA shop make $300k/yr, make two basement suites, etc and can pretty much live an unintelligent life.

I wish they(Canadian govt) do something about it, but so far they just trying to claim victory when the demand is dying - which feels hypocritical and misleading.

*ahem* for vast majority of people, university is a place to acquiring creds for skills that help you make money. Politics not withstanding. Western universities are best ones out there for that.

That education is increasingly becoming irrelevant because employers now place a great deal of emphasis on job skills and relevant work experience. Most big companies require their employees to undergo internal training programs. It used to be that education was used as a passport to gain interview opportunities and for prospective employers to filter candidates. Nowadays, these universities have bloated admin departments and offer a lot of garbage courses like gender studies, political science etc. You said politics notwithstanding but politics has now been mixed with education in most of these universities, at least the ones in North America. Besides, how in the world would you trust an institution which promotes nazi propaganda?

However for folks for India it is a long waiting time to get Green Card and hence very few seem to want to go they say, it is true?
I have been telling people to forget GC is they have plans to move to US on a TN or H1 B or L1B unless the have a priority date form their previous US stay. If GC is the goal, find an employer that can sponsor L1 A and no matter where you are born, you will get GC quickly.

And how in the world were you able to equate a protest for freedom, for rights, for not to be genocided to nazi propaganda and anti-semitism? I am not schooling you but Palestinian people are semites too. Do some impartial research on your own about the matter, and the blindfold put on you through powerful and sophisticated PR and lobbying will come off. Unless you choose to keep it on.
India very historically recently lived under the often brutal oppression and occupation of British Monarchy, so I find it strange and bizarre you (and other Hinduvta Pajeets/Right Wingers) cannot see the attrocities Palestenian people have had to suffer for simply existing and resisting the occupation.

Here's what Canada has: Freedom. When/If you have kids, don't send them to school or universities. Teach them a skill and send them off to live in the world. Academia in the western countries does have a major problem, but the solution is not to get rid of the universities as a whole.

I interview people for my employer. I personally have not seen any significant number of non degree holders to get a job. Even in big picture offical stats, the same is reflected :
https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/unemployment-rates-for-persons-25-years-and-older-by-educational-attainment.htm

Noteworthy, during leaner periods, non degree holders do much much worse.

Politics has always been a part of college life, true. I mean colleges in USA were breeding grounds for political movements alright (vietnam war opposition), BUT the motivation for immigrants coming to study in foreign universities has always been skills, jobs and chance to immigrate. On that end nothing beats western universities.

Even the best non-western universities like NTU or NUS or TokyoU do not offer same opportunities that even non-top universities in west offer -- likes of USC, ASU, VTech, UCSB, UBC etc.

On politics... well... let me put it in this way: Canada and US have been established on lands stolen and people genocided to make literal "living room" for europeans. To this day the hate and neglect for First Nations is so great in these countries that they do not even build roads to their "reserves" so that these people can not vote enough. Yes, its that bad. Even basic token things are not done. Things like changing the name of the law in the constitution. It still calls the laws dealing with them as "Indian Act". Law still calls them as "Indians". Think about it, its like calling blacks "N-word" in law.

Give all of this, may I ask, what are you doing seeking or obtained immigration to such countries? If you so deeply care about morals that is. How can you bring yourself to trust these countries in the first place to reside here? Do remember, these countries have also imprisoned Japanese immigrants back in World War 2 for no other offense other than their ethnicities. Do you still feel comfortable to immigrate here? Compared to that, western colleges/universities are total saints.

Changes to international student program:
1. Marc Miller said that they are lowering the student permit applications to 365k, but that's not the full story. They are lowering it by 365k for undergraduate and college level programs. Which basically isn't a big of a cut if we look at it. It would be a net reduction of maybe 10-15%. This is a also a temporary cap of 2 years.
2. Public-Private Institution models, will no longer be eligible for PGWP from 1 Sep 2024
3. Spouses of International students other than Masters/PhD and specialized programs in medicine and law - will no longer be eligible for Spouse open work permits (SOWP).

When liberals get destroyed in polls, they begin to act. It’s extremely funny to watch politicians squirm.
