Entering Canada on Visit Visa and not COPR

Hello!

My wife has a Canadian 10 year visit visa and visited Canada last summer. Earlier this year she received her COPR. Is it possible to enter Canada on her Visit Visa and not the COPR?

Reason is she will not be able to stay in Canada for more than a few days before heading out to the US for about 3 weeks and re-entering Canada. I understand the issue with requiring the PR card or PRTD if leaving Canada once landing is completed, but her initial stay in Canada as well as her trip to the US will not give her enough time to acquire either the PR card nor PRTD.

So if she can enter the first time using her visit visa and then make her 2nd entry using the COPR, this could solve our dilemma, but is this is actually possible? Or is the visit visa now invalid due to her receiving her COPR?

Thank you!

Did she land virtually, or has she not even landed yet as a PR?

Once a person lands and becomes a Permanent Resident, any previous visas are usually invalidated...because they are no longer needed.

She can re-enter Canada without a PR Card at a land PoE if travelling in a personal vehicle, or on foot. A valid PR Card is required only if travelling via a commercial carrier (Air, rail, bus, etc.).

Hi there!

She has not landed yet and is currently living outside Canada. So I am hoping she enters first on her visit visa so she can avoid doing a land or foot entry when she enters Canada the second time.

Makes sense. If she had activated her CoPR and was now a PR, that plan likely would have failed.

What is the expiry date on the CoPR?

Unless it is essential that she comes to Canada first, why not do the US trip first, then come to Canada after that and do the landing? Wouldn't be any issues then.

Unfortunately we have to come to Canada first, otherwise yes this could all be avoided. Guess will just tell the kind folks when we land that we don't have our CoPR with us, just the visit visa and smile :)

You know they have computers, right? They'll figure it out, and you'll just look silly if you deny it.

Just tell the truth. From what I've heard they do not 'make' someone land (finalize the PR status) if they have a valid entry visa of other kind.

YMMV.

"We don't plan to do our PR landings yet." is not a hard sentence to say. And not as unusual a situation as you think it is.

Yes. I mean, to put this a different way, they don't generally force people to become PRs.

That doesn't mean admission is guaranteed, mind. But if the copr holder is otherwise admissable and the reason to not become a PR right now is plausible, can't imagine they care much.

(That said most of the time I'd suggest just landing, but okay, there are situatiosn where it might make sense).

Good to know..thank you!
One thing to keep in mind, they likely will ask why not. I mean, lots of new PRs travel very long distances just to do the landing procedures and then leave. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just unusual. And they're law enforcement, unusual things make them pay attention.

Just tell the truth though - you would do the landing now but then it will make flying back a few weeks later way more complicated (because you won't get PR card in time).

For sure, nothing but the truth. Usually gets things sorted lot quicker anyways. Appreciate the help!
