Can anyone help with this question please. Are you able to work in Canada as soon as you have landed on PR status or do you have to wait for your PR Card?

Thank you,

No need to wait for the card.

You need a Social Insurance Number (SIN), obtain from Service Canada office. Just need your passport and copy of COPR.

You can work as soon as you have your SIN number as employer will require it.

you can work as soon as you apply for SIN. take the record of landing to the service canada office and apply for SIN, then you can start work right away. if you are working already it doesn't really matter if you take a day or two to update the SIN.

Thanks for the response. How long does it usually take to receive the SIN number?

you get the number on the same day. the card can take 4-6 weeks. you can give the number to HR and provide them with the card later.

Excellent, thank you both for the info.

MANY Inland applicants are reporting that they have been told that they do in fact need their PR card to get a SIN.

Ya but inland applicants should already have a SIN via their OWP that comes with inland application, which they can continue to use until they get PR card and permanent SIN.

Take all your landing doc and your passport to Canada Service. They will issue you a SIN ( Social Insaurance number.) That's what you need to start working in Canada.

But not every Inland applicant submits an OWP with their Inland application. It only comes with their Inland application if they applied separately for an OWP.

There is no reason an inland applicant shouldn't submit an OWP app either at time of initial application, or after getting AIP.

they can apply for OWP after AIP which is much before the landing. so most people will have a permit while waiting for DM. unless they are happy to remain out of status. even students can get SIN now.

It depends on whether the applicants applied inland or outland. Outland applicants can apply for permanent SIN the day they land. Whereas inland applicants may get lucky depending on what office they land at, do they get permanent SIN upon landing. Others not so lucky and end up having to wait for PR card before applying for their SIN. In the meantime, those that applied for OWP with the inland application can use their temporary SIN to work.

Perhaps, but that still doesn't mean that everyone does.

Likely because they STILL have no clue how much longer it takes to get the actual PR card in their hands!!

Sure there is. I didn't apply for an OWP because it would have been a waste of money. I didn't speak enough French to work here until pretty recently.
