Our main decision for me to immigrate to Canada was based on the fact that my husband has Cystic Fibrosis. He is still seen by doctors that have known him since he was born and know what he needs. Everything is supplied for him for free. I felt it was very important that he stay where his essential needs would be taken care of. Plus he was only in the US for 4 months and when we arrived back, he had to be hospitalized for the first time in his whole life. He was there for 3 weeks. Those were the longest 3 weeks of my life. I could have lost him and he could have never have gotten all the things he needed for free and so fast if he was at my home. It was then that it hit me, that his health was what mattered most especially if we wanted to spend a long life together. Also, since he has Cystic Fibrosis, the only way we can produce a child is through in vitro fertilization. In vitro is not covered under provincial medical coverage but it is much more affordable here than in the United States. Also, when we do have children, I want them to grow up in a healthy environment with clean air and lots of nature.

All in all, I can see the two of us having a very successful life together here.
And my main reason for immigrating is because I fell in love with a handsome man named Grant. He is my heart and soul. <3
I am sure you all know where I am coming from. :)
I can imagine how hard that must've been for you.

But happy that you can both live in a place where he'll be well taken care of.

I wish you the best, I hope it all works out for you.

im immigrating because i wanna live together with my husband. if not canada i can live anywhere with him. as long as he is with me. since he already migrated from his home country to canada years ago, i think it wouldnt be very fair if i asked him to migrate again to my country. plus he has a job here and i have only diploma over there. also i already know english language since small, and he would need to learn my language from zero. etc.

First a specific question, then a general observation.

Someone said: “And although I do complain about some little things (THE FOOD!!!!), Canada is a lovely place to be.”

Question: What is it you don’t like? As far as I know, the variety of cuisine is the same as in the States, but the portions are smaller.

None of the replies explaining the decision to come to Canada focused on Canada`s culture, or natural beauty, or climate (for obvious reasons), etc. The reasons were simply practical: better health care for a serious condition; the spouse already in Canada happened to have the better job; closer to family, etc.

Is Canada just a convenient stopping place?

My husband is coming here. I have two sons and it would not be logical to move to India and their father wouldnt allow it anyway. For us its just being together. It would be much easier for him to adjust to Canadian life then it would fro me to adjust. I can do it, but there are so many necessities here that are considered luxuries there not to mention the heat and malaria medication which I just can not tolerate. So bottom line is, if we wanted to be together Canada was our only choice until my sons are older.

I was wondering about this one myself. Maybe they're from a place in the States where fresh local produce is available year-round. Or maybe they're moving from a big city to a small one.

Funny, but I lived abroad for 10 years, and the one thing I never got used to was the climate. I like it cold: not -40, OK, but I just don't want to spend any more time in places where it is 35 degrees C or more, and humid, all year long.
My husband says he wants to immigrate to Canada because of me. He's definitely not interested in Canada's culture or natural beauty. I want to stay in Canada because of my family and because it's my home.

Hmm i think maybe the price of food.. there is a huge difference between the food that i eat in Uruguay and the food i ate in Canada.. i would have to say Uruguay's food is way better.. i know the beef is 1000000000000000000% better.. the cows actually eat grass and walk outside and see the sun... fruits and veggies although aren't organic.. are not GMO and don't cost a bazillion dollars... i can get around 20 kilos of fruits and veggies for about $10 each week..

true we have to do everything by hand.. and there are days that I WISH we had central heating (like today)or a dryer(like yesterday when my clothes were hanging outside and all of a sudden it started to rain!!) but these are minor things...

I hope that my family (well really ME) will remember that a humble life is also a happy life... and that we don't get sucked into the consumerism trap once in Canada.... because it is so hard to get out of...

Everyone is immigrating for different reasons.. I just hope to bring my family unit (DH, DD, and DS) to Canada and take advantage of the opportunities and happy life together... there is no doubt that Canada does offer many things that other countries do not... Education as I mentioned at the beg. is at the top of my list.. If i compare my experiences to the experiences that Uruguay can give my children they would be missing out on SOOOO much. Plus I chose to live in Uruguay --- they did not.. They should make that decision for themselves if they want to come back one day... but they need to have the resources to make the decision --

There will be a lot of things that we will miss.. -- but I am confident and excited about this new step in our lives.. its going to be a good one.. and if we can start it all together as a family .. even better :)

I don't feel that this comment was fair at all. I am from a small southern US town, and anyone who has lived/eaten in the Southern states knows that the food is different from anywhere else. I also have food allergies and had stomach surgery in the past so I can't walk into just any restaurant and eat, and it just makes things more complicated with me. I have to eat the kind of foods I've been eating my whole life, which my stomach is used to. New foods for most people are interesting ,but they just make me sick. I haven't found that the food anywhere in Canada tastes the same as home, and it's been an issue in terms of my health.

And I hope you realize I was saying that in a joking manner.

If my husband wasn't here, it isn't a place I would choose to live on my own. I saw some awesome riots downtown this weekend and the cost of everything is ungodly. If I was just considering myself, I wouldn't be living here. There are many places in the world I would like to visit and live in, places where my teaching degree would land me a job instead of a temp agency gig, which is probably what waits for me.. but if you had bothered to actually read my whole post, you would have seen that I am coming here because my husband is happier here. He is established here, his family is here, and he doesn't do as well with change as I do. That is what a good spouse does.

Don't get me wrong, as I said, Canada is generally a nice place, but I'm tired of the mindset that I'm trading way up in this situation. Canada is nice enough, but don't talk to me like I'm some mail order bride leaving some awful place to come take advantage of your social programs. I was doing very well in the US, I had good healthcare and my needs were more than met. I just want to be where my husband is happy.

I'm getting sick and tired of judgmental people.

No, it doesn't have to be that way. If this was some message board for high schoolers I would understand, but it isn't..

OK oK; I was not judging or indirectly criticizing; I was just asking for information since I was not aware of any food differences. You seem to feel I was attackng or judging you in some way, and you are wrong. You take me to task for not troubling to read your post. I did read it; my commments that the majority of posts did not give "Canada" as reason for moving, but rather practical reasons, was a comment on the majority of posts. I was not singling you out -- so please relax a bit.

And I hope you realize I was saying that in a joking manner.

Well, if it was a joke, there was no hint. ANd if you were joking, why the long explanation of the state of your stomach? You can't claim health reasons for commenting on food differences and then say you were joking at the same time. It's inconsistent, and unfair to rebuke me for not detecting subtleties that possibly weren't really there in your words.

Wow, you really do have a woebegone attitude. Who said you are trading up? Certainly there's no hint of that in my post.

Canada is nice enough, but don't talk to me like I'm some mail order bride leaving some awful place to come take advantage of your social programs. I was doing very well in the US, I had good healthcare and my needs were more than met. I just want to be where my husband is happy.

This is too much. Please support the (ridiculous) claim that I am treating you like a mail order bride.

I'm getting sick and tired of judgmental people.

And I'm getting tired of the whining, taking a perfectly neutral post (like mine) and projecting your personal resentments onto it. I never said any of the things you unjustly accuse me of.

The food IS different - it's easier to get foods in Canada for persons with food allergies; I find in the southern states it's difficult to trust that the food is safe and not readily avail in the markets. But my favorite foods are from diverse cultures and all food have regional differences - I hardly make the same thing the same way twice, so I can't complain about that too much.

Culture-wise, there really isn't much difference anymore. The biggest difference is that in the states they have a right to bear arms (although discharging said is questionable to illegal there and both bearing and discharging is illegal here).

The climate is different, not better or worse: it's lovely today in southern Ontario and hellishly hot and humid in North Carolina, but they had eight inches of snow in one storm this past winter and, frankly, I don't think we got that much all winter.

I would think that for a family-based application when the predominant issue is being with your spouse rather than, perhaps a skilled worker application where you may also be looking for a better place to raise your family, the practical issues are what does take precedence. I find the culture similar, and too is the natural beauty (although the beauty is more diverse in the US than here).

I kind of think - to my mind - that for family based applications, immigration would prefer that it is a practicality-based decision and that you care coming for love of spouse not love of Canada. But that's just me...

Coming in here and accusing everyone here of coming to Canada for no other reason than to use it as a 'stopping place' is quite insulting and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. Why would we go to all this trouble if that was all it was?

And in terms of the food differences, I was a bit insulted that the portion sizes seemed to be the only reason that I could dislike the food.. and I was 'joking' because I'm not such a shallow person as to dismiss a place because I can't find a good restaurant :)

By the way, my best friend is from Germany and says that the food tastes different in every country.. even things that should be basically the same, like apple juice, etc. She thinks it has to do with different processing, food laws, etc.
