Hi.... I would suggest carry about $1000-$1500 by cash and the rest by a foreign currency cheque.... Once your account is opened, deposit the cheque.... This is the safest option... but please ensure that you don't carry more than $10,000 as it is the maximum limit....

1. Travel Card (Thomas Cook) is much safer than carrying a cash. Deduction only if withdrawing cash from ATM. Back in India, anyone can recharge it.
2. As an alternative, you can carry American Traveler's cheque (fully refundable if lost/stolen) & you can redeem it by opening a bank a/c.
3. You can carry more, but anything over CAD 10000 (in any form) must be declared to custom. Avoid foreign exchange at airport, pretty expensive.

1) Whats the other way of using Travel Card, without deduction?
2) Ok, we can get this from India, right?
3) Just to confirm : we can carry half cash in carry in baggage and rest in luggage, wont be a problem right?

One more query:

I am an International student from India, coming to Canada for my Masters ( 2 Years)
My university (Concordia , edmonton) has taken $300 for health coverage
I want to know how does it benefit us?

Moreover, the alberta health card, is it valid for international students also? And how to get that card?

Thanks

1. Its like a swiping your debit/credit card, its all cashless in Canada, very rare to use cash for transaction.
2. Yes. Available with SBI (lot of paper work), I would recommend Thomas Cook or any leading private bank.
3. You can stash it anywhere.
4. Only general visit/advice/tests by Doctor. Does not cover surgery etc.
5. Yes. http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/registration-requirements.html
