I'm intrigued, what is it that you dislike about Edmonton? My fiancé works with someone who is very vocal about hating it there, but she can't understand why we would want to leave the UK because she lives it!

She needs to visit the real Canada, the UK will not hold that much attraction for her after that trip :)

Well, it of course depends what you compare it too. I also know a bunch of people who really like it here, so I am sure it's all relative and a matter of "taste:. I have lived in for years in Vienna and then Zurich, which are both very beautiful cities full of charme and atmosphere. So I guess it's hard for Edmonton to live up to that....

But personally I honestly can't find anything nice here. The city is ugly (the only nice building is the Legislature), most of downtown is not a good place to be (Edmonton has one of the higher crime rates compared to other Canadian cities). And most importantly I feel there is just not much to do here (as in the city doesn't really offer a lot to its residents I find).
Moreover it's all about cars (50% of people drive huge SUVs or pickup trucks), and there is no pedestrian area at all.

The Rockies are somewhat close, but it's still a 4-5 hour drive and hence you gotta do a least a weekend trip. Edmonton is in the prairie, and I personally am not a big fan of flat landscapes. But that's just personal taste again...

Absolutely!! Although we are in Brighton so maybe she likes it here for a very obvious 'lifestyle' reason (that she hasn't admitted to yet!).

Valy79-that makes sense, you have been in some very beautiful cities so I totally understand why Edmonton doesn't thrill you - it's kinda like comparing Rome with Manchester!!

I think for all those not liking the mainland should come over to Newfoundland before you judge all places of being ugly and unlikable.
It still has a great culture, calm small city, good amount of stores, open-minded people, beautiful scenery, good schools, very low crime rate even in the city, good job opportunities, good standard of living, and still has an old time charm in itself. Great place to raise a family. Most people who don't like the mainland find themselves liking it here and some don't like it here but like the mainland better. I just say before you ever decided to move away from Canada give this place a chance since it is a province forgotten about a lot. Try it and you'll like it. Might take you awhile to adjust to it but once you do you won't want to live anywhere else. :D

We lived in Calgary a few years before moving to Australia and we're hoping to move back there if/when we get my PR. My husband is originally from Ontario, but a really small town, beautiful, but we need to be somewhere with good employment opportunities and we both love the mountains and the community in Calgary.

Well said LoveYoung. I personally love Edmonton for what it is, which is why I'm moving back, but I can see why people would find it ugly if they are comparing architecture etc. with some European cities.
My first roadtrip (after taking the kids down to Calgary Zoo!) is to get up to see my brother in Yellowknife. When I was a kid we did a lot of family vacations but never to cities (we're an outdoor family) so I am looking forward to seeing what I missed, but I'm pretty sure I'll still prefer camping at Elk Island or looking out over Maligne Lake! I spent a couple of days in Vancouver a few years ago, but even then seemed to spend more time in Stanley Park?!?....and the science museum - I had way more fun than any of the kids there!!!

I live in the very beautiful peaceful mountain town of Nelson, BC. My wife will be immigrating from Bahia Brazil.

My wifes former husband (& father of my step-kids) is from Nelson. I've only heard good things about it. I hope to visit one day :)
No idea if you'd have heard of his brother but he's the pro skateboarder Keegan Sauder.

Thanks for the comments Heck.
Lots of pro athletes from around here. Born and raised or otherwise.
Lots of other things around here too, amazing place it is with amazing
people.

Wow almost everyone here is in or will be settling in the big cities in Canada.

Not everyone :) ..we're planning on settling in Port Hardy, on the north tip of Vancouver Island. A tiny little town where my husband grew up. It feels like it's on the edge of the wilderness.

Coming from Providence, RI and will be living (I HOPE) in Guelph, Ontario. Not too big a culture shock, it's much like it is here at home size and climate wise, though Guelph does get more snow. This will be my first time living not on the coast and it's a little weird to think of!

currently in Calgary. i love it here, though the weather is changing constantly! not sure if i like thi chinooks :-D

I'm from a small village on the South East coast of England and my husband was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. Together we have lived in a few cities in the Greater Vancouver area haha Langley, Burnaby, Surrey, Vancouver, North Vancouver and we currently have an apartment in Coquitlam, which we both love, but to settle down and start a family, we want to move back to North Vancouver as we both loved it there and felt at home. I am currently back in the UK while PR is being processed...my husband is looking after things in Coquitlam. It's going to be so worth it! :D

Where abouts in England? We're in Worthing, near Brighton.
