Hello,

I am at my wits end trying to find a correct answer to my question so I though I would ask it here..

When a sponsored person (family class, spouse) arrives to Canada, in this case I am sponsoring my wife who lives in Bosnia and when she arrives here what kind of papers will she be getting?

Will she be allowed to travel outside of Canada, in this case the USA or further south such as Cuba/Mexico? Or must she wait a certain amount of time before we can vacation?

Thank you for your help.

I don't know about papers, as my wife hasn't landed yet, but as for travel, yes she can travel outside Canada as long as she satisfies the PR residency requirement.

Only problem is she has to obviously use her Bosnian passport to travel, as she cannot get a Canadian passport yet, but I've heard that foreign passports with Canadian PR are far more likely to be approved a tourist visa.

Thanks for the quick reply.

By PR I assume you mean primary? as in primary residency requirement? When she arrives here, I assume this satisfies the PR residency requirement.. She would then need to apply to get a tourist visa to travel on vacation correct?

Thanks.

She has to be physically in Canada for at least 2 out of 5 years to keep her PR.

She has to get a tourist visa to go anywhere that a Bosnian national is required to. Has to send in visa application documents to whatever country requires it. Only difference is because she's a PR, she's far more likely to be approved for the visa than a Bosnian national without PR. At least that's what I've heard.

That's exactly right. For example, we got my wife (travel document is Filipino passport) a U.S. visit visa (Canadians don't need one), but she was granted 10 years.

Even as a Canadian PR, she needs to apply for travel visas based on her passport, for whatever country she wants to visit.

Also after landing in Canada it will take around 2+ months for her to receive her PR card in the mail. So she can't travel anywhere outside Canada before this time else she will need to arrange a special travel document which can be a big hassle to do.

When her visa is approved she will receive a COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residency).... and her passport will also have a visa stamped on it.... she can use these to enter Canada... at the time of entry the officer will complete her application for PR n that's pretty much it....

a few months later her PR card will arrive in the mail.... She can leave Canada before receiving her PR card... but she cannot re-enter Canada using her COPR as that document is only for her arrival.... so its better to have her PR card in hand until she has her card in hand...

As a Canadian PR she does not yet have citizenship so she will be travelling on her Bosnian passport.... so all the same travel requirements that apply to Bosnian passport holders will still apply to her... but having Canadian PR may help in getting the visa sooner depending on the country and their visa requirements...
