Cisco and Microsoft have turned to at-home testing and they are doing just fine. They insist you install their own exam software so they know what programs you have running, and you have to be on webcam with minimal fidgeting and you have to show them a 360 of the entire room before you start.

It's legit and it is potentially the way moving forward.

I highly doubt the naysayers have a clue about at-home examinations. I'm facing up to 6 exams @ home this year so it's very real.
This wouldn't work with mass exams; if they have 1000 people taking the test online at the same time, they would need to hire 1000 proctors to watch them individually and constantly. They could be hiding notes in blind spots that the webcam can't see after the initial sweep. Someone could even use a family member or hire someone to take the exam for them. The only way to ensure no one is cheating is to have do it in-person.

I wonder why would someone cheat in citizenship test that is meant to increase your knowledge about this beautiful country!!! To be honest this will come down to one ethics and put some strict fines for people doing cheating!!! No one with sane mind would cheat this knowing the impact of being caught!!!

And if someone does cheat, how will that affect their lives as a citizen? Is someone a bad citizen if they don't have some dates memorized? Why not just ask some civic questions on a zoom call? Interviews are 1:1 anyway.

Back in mid February, I was invited for a citizenship test in early March. However, I was in the US for my work. So I contacted IRCC immediately for rescheduling. I reached out a couple times to follow up via email and the web form but I NEVER heard back. I also didn't get any notification from IRCC including COVID. Anyone have a similar situation? I understand that due to COVID, everything is cancelled. But not getting any responses for 4 months is ridiculous.

People cheat because they are desparate and/or dishonest. If you do the work and follow the rules, you don't need to cheat; it's as simple as that.

If you want to have the format changed to just in-person interviews, then that is something you need to bring up with the government. Until then, exams are still part of the process, and rules need to be followed.

I am not asking why people cheat. I am asking what Canada loses if someone cheats on the citizenship test? If a doctor cheats on his licensing test, I understand that it's dangerous for patients.

But if a Canadian had cheated on his citizenship test, does it really matter to Canada that he didn't actually learn about the war of 1812? Why is it critical that he should have memorized that? You are a citizen by descent - well done. Did you give a test?

Good idea, I will write to my MP. And I will continue to express absurd rules and processed where and when I see them.

That was not addressed to you, please check to whom I was replying. And yes, I am a citizen by descent because I am eligible to be a citizen under the law; just as taking the exam to be naturalized is mandated under the law.

Laws don't always make sense. It seems memorizing dates and passing a test is very essential to becoming a naturalized citizen and it's interesting that you have such strong views on that even though you yourself did not give the test. Do you feel you are not able to exercise your duties as a citizen effectively as a result?

Here is a quote from the official website (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/citizenship-test.html#toc0)

Your test is usually written but may be oral. A citizenship official may decide on test day that you will have an oral test instead of a written one.

So it is NOT mandated by law to have a written test.

Did I specifically say "written exam"? Even with an oral exam, you are still taking it in-person with the examiner.

Yes, you implied it here in response to my idea of asking the test questions orally.

The citizenship page doesn't specify that it has to be a closed book test.
