Hi, I am in a dilemma. I received my AOR for CEC this month, and am getting married this April. What would be the best Visa to bring my spouse over to Canada? I was thinking of bringing her here on a visitor visa, then apply for an open work permit, and then add her to my CEC PR application citing my AOR.

I would really appreciate it if anybody who have gone through this route can shed some light on their experience. Is this the best approach? Applying for an OWP in India takes a few months and the delay is inconvenient. Your advice is much appreciated.

Inform CIC about the expected future family composition change right away. They will reply back with steps to add spouse to your application post marriage. After marriage, add your spouse to the application and then the proceedings will follow from CIC.

Not informing CIC in time about expected changes in family composition or personal status can result in adverse decisions if found "not good" by CIC.

Moreover PR processing for your future wife will be quicker in this way unlike when you add her later. Open work permits aren't coming out easily these days. When you can get her processing done along with yours just with a wait for a couple months, why would you want to spend money on multiple types of visas for her and go through all those documentation work again and again.

When you say visitor, you mean dependent I believe. So that means you would be getting your spouse here on your current closed WP. Just make sure that your current WP has a validity of more than 6 months before you apply for her dependent (visitor) visa.

As said by the above gentleman, you will have to notify CIC first about your plans and ask them for steps to add your spouse in your PR application.

Thank you for your responses!

I should have made my post more clear:

I have a Post Graduate Work Permit (Open Permit) that expires May 2016, and I was referring to adding her as a dependent on my Work Permit once I get her here on a Dependent Visa (TRV) this April. And then add her on to my CEC application for which I received an AOR last week.

As suggested, I will speak to CIC right away. I am just apprehensive of applying for her PR when not 'inland' as that process reportedly takes a very long time.

Thank you once again everybody!

hey arjy2405,

I guess you are confusing urself with Inland Family Sponsorship, which is taking forever right now.
But you don't have to worry about that.

All you need to do ( and the very best thing to do ) is to email CIC about a month prior to your wedding that there is going to be a change in your marital status. They will provide instructions on what updated forms to be submitted to add her to your CEC Application.

After your marriage you can apply for her TRV in India, providing your WP docs, marriage certificate etc. she will get it in 2 weeks and then she can come here. Once she is here, she can apply for OWP based on ur PGWP.
Post your marriage, as per instructions from CIC you will also be adding her to your CEC.

If you land as a PR without informing CIC about ur marriage, you are screwed later. This would be misrepresentation and you can never sponsor ur wife in future through Family Sponsorship ( Inland or Outland ). Moreover there is a chance for your PR to be revoked.

Other things to keep in mind for those planning for marriage is, it is always better to marry before getting PR or during the process and updating ur application.

its difficult for spouse to get TRV if you are a PR already. so u r looking at living separately till their PR is approved which could be between 12 - 15 months or worse !
And the family sponsorship focuses on the genuineness of relationship. you will end up submitting a heavy application package which is atleast 3 kgs.
where as right now all u need is ur marriage certificate !
