amikety, your boyfriend should have reported to CRA as soon as you became common-law, this would also have been good evidence to send in with you application. Immigration and CRA have different rules according to immigration you are a visitor and that is it, to CRA you are a non-resident for tax purposes. This is nothing that a phone call can't fix. No you do not need police clearance from Canada, they run their own background checks.
Would it matter if my husband calls before the year is up or waits until next year? Or would I be able to call myself?

There's a form you should submit, because once married there are some benefits that are restricted (e.g., the GST/HST rebate, which is limited to one person in a married couple).

RC65 - Marital Status Change

Thanks! My husband doesn't qualify for the rebates anyway, haha!

Does he fill it out and add me as his spouse? If so, what do I put for my social insurance number? I have a VR with a nine digit number beginning with a 9 at the top right corner, but it hasn't worked as a "SIN" in the past.

You either don't put anything, put zeros or put your ITN there.

I don't have one of those. I guess this is what I need to call and get, then have my husband change to add me?

I'm really glad this was mentioned in passing here, because I would've been out of compliance for the 2012 year come tax season 2013. I never would've thought as a "visitor" I had any business filing taxes in Canada. It would've been nice if Immigration would let people know, say when they issue a year long VR..... Just my little rant ;) Thanks for bringing this to my attention! :D

Parker I told you before when we were all having the problems with us owing and then CRA owing us and waiting months to get it worked out. I am here as a visitor and since my VR was for longer then 6 months they (CRA) issued me a temporary taxation number (TTN) and was told I must file a return even if my income in Canada is 0.00. and you must claim all world income either from work, interest drawing accounts, stocks, bonds, anything that brings money into your pocket.
Hm weird, they never mentioned that for my husband, just kept asking for his SIN and I had to keep telling them he does not HAVE one and finally they told me to just send them a copy of the application, when I did, I guess they realized he can't HAVE a SIN *shakes head*

Hi all I was referred to this threat on a question I have. My fiance is in the Canadian Army and I am in the US.

If we get married in a courthouse (most likely Rochester, NY before the new year) then have the Army send him to CF base in London, On. And once we get the Marriage Certificate I would apply for PR. But instead of living in Ontario we would live with my parents in Rochester, NY when he isn't working and I would drive him to the base when he is needed until I get approved. I would be able to get a random job to save money and he would be able to do his job too. Would this work out at all??

If I drive him to the CF base 1 day a week and then what ever weekends they tell him he needs to work... as well as any extra work he gets. So how often and frequently can we cross the boarder driving? I know untimely it is up to the patrol person. But How often do you think we can cross in a day? Once to Canada let him work and me...idk shop or whatever then several hours later when he is done we drive back to NY. Would a NEXUS pass help us? Are they less likely to deny us if we have one? Cuz if we are denied then what? He misses duty gets charged.....

There's no hard limit. They just have to be convinced he's not living in the US.

Nexus would help tremendously - it speeds the whole process, gives you expedited crossing (because you have been pre-examined) and makes travel a lot more pleasant - and it's not just restricted to driving across the border. It gives you expedited boarding at US and Canadian airports, makes you eligible for US Global Entry and for US Citizens it grants fast entry into the Netherlands and Australia. Best $50 I've ever spent.

Hi, I am sponsoring my common-law husband from the US. We are doing an outland application.

Application filed on July 27, 2012
application recd: on July 30th
October 12: letter from CPP-Ottawa requesting documentation
November 8: sponsorship approved

Our file is staying with CPP_Ottawa. Has anyone had any experience with them? How long do you think it will take for processing?

thank you so much.
Applicants through CPP-Ottawa appear to take about 7-9 months, according to tracking spreadsheets on this forum, even though CIC website says 12 months. Check the April 2012 applicants thread....many are getting PPR now.

These timeframes make me very hopeful for my application, my wife was approved to sponsor on October 22nd which means we have somewhere around 4 to 6 months left(assuming ours follows the same trend as the ones shown in the spreadsheets/this thread)

That would be such a relief because I was expecting a year or more =)

That's what I had expected for our case as well (and from speaking with others who had been in my similar situation) but I made the 20% group. It's good because immigration can make you go insane.

So what happens after PPR? Meaning, we applied via Outland process but my U.S. wife has remained in Canada as a visitor throughout the process. Once we get the PPR request and assuming no interview, we would copy or scan her passport and send it to CPP-Ottawa?? They will issue some kind of letter or confirmation of perm residence?? Then she would have to go to a U.S.-Canada border somewhere and get passport stamped or something? Is this how it works?

She will send a copy of her passport (or actual passport if requested) and they will issue an IMM 5292 - a legal sized document entitled "Confirmation of Permanent Residency". You get two copies of it. You need photos for at least one of the copies (if you didn't send them with the PPR response). We usually abbreviate this as "COPR".

With the COPR and her passport, she may appear at a Port of Entry to finalize her PR - which means her status formally changes from "foreign national" to "permanent resident". This can also be done (by appointment) at an inland office, though that typically takes 2-8 weeks and is scheduled by contacting the CIC Call Centre.

In either case, they keep one copy of the COPR (and send it to Sydney, NS for the production of her initial PR Card) and they give one back. They stamp her passport. If she is bringing in goods (or plans on bringing them in the future) they will process her B4/B4A forms and return a copy to her (important for goods to follow).

It's definitely a positive experience. 8)
