Hi,

I recently submitted a family class sponsor application (spouse) for my spouse living in India. I wanted to know when CIC will give me my UCI? And what does it mean when I receive it? Does it mean that I am approved as a sponsor?

the sponsor will receive their UCI number when they receive sponsor approval letter or if CIC contacts them regarding missing paperwork (by email or mail). it's the number you and CIC will use to identify you in their system for any immigration needs going forward. you'll also be able to use this number to sign on to the online system, ecas. besides that, there is no other use for the number.

A UCI doesn't suggest approval. the letter stating the decision is what suggest approval or rejection. a UCI is created for anyone who applies for anything immigration related. people who are approved and people who are rejected all receive a UCI. it is a tracking number for applicants. that is all.

the applicant may receive their UCI if their visa office sends out an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) once the file has arrived at the visa office. most offices do not send this so a lot of applicants do not receive their UCI until CIC contacts them regarding an application request, passport request or approval.

If you have had any dealings with CIC at all you will already have a UCI. That number is permanent and will not be changed for any reason. If you are a Canadian born and have had no dealings with CIC, they will issue a new UCI. This number refers only to your file with CIC. All correspondence with CIC will come with this unique number.

As a sponsor, if everything is right with your application, you will first note your UCI on the sponsorship approval letter they send to you. If for any reason they need to contact you before deciding on your eligibility you will notice this number in the correspondence. e.g. your acknowledgement of receipt of application from CPC-Miss will have your UCI.

The UCI doesn't mean you are approved. Just that CIC now has your information in their system.
