my parents have submitted an H&C and PRRA application last year in Oct 22 and in August 23 they received a medical exam request. We haven’t heard from them ever since. Wondering if the medical is done regardless of acceptance or rejection of the application and should we follow up with IRCC for an update?
My brother and I are PR in Canada.

Processing times are estimated at 19 months right now so you likely have a while to wait and I personally am not sure it makes sense to follow up at this time. The medical indicates the application is progressing but doesn't guarantee approval. If you want more insights into what is happening with the application and if IRCC has any concerns, then order GCMS notes.

These are the officer case notes which give more details about the case. If you google GCMS you'll be able to see easily how to order them.

I spoke to my lawyer today and he said usually the medical exam is requested if there’s an approval in play otherwise they won’t request for one.. has anyone had a situation where their application has been rejected after the medical?

Yes, it's possible to be rejected after the medical.

A medical is pretty standard especially for their age group and means very little in term for approval or denial of an H&C claim. Given that seniors may also need additional testing which can take time so starting the process is also another reason to order earlier. They weren’t outright denied but very few cases, especially first H&C cases, are denied soon after applying as long as you qualify to apply for H&C.

Looks like nowadays there is no order anymore - over the past 6 months I have seen so many cases where medical is requested but no idea of the final result after that....so unfortunately it doesn't look like a confirmed positive anymore nowadays:( I was hoping for the same since June but still waiting... but I don't understand why they wait until the end for eligibility after spending so long completing everything else?

During the first year there is no processing for most first appplications. Medicals used to be done after AIP unless the H&C claim was based on a medical issue when it may have been done earlier. Doing medical before AIP actually makes a lot more sense because it allows the H&C employee to have a full picture of the case before deciding about AIP. Medicals can also take a long time if further testing is needed so it is best to start it earlier. If people receive AIP after doing medicals there is even a higher chance of full approval as long as the applicant can show that they are financially independent and if AIP is received then the journey to PR can move forward much faster then having to wait to complete medical, having the medical reviewed and potentially needing further testing which would also have to be reviewed, etc.
