So you have to have a FBI check and a local state check for the police checks?I only did the FBI check.

I just looked on CIC and all I seen was that you need the FBI check. It gives the address and says that the FBI check will serve as your criminal background check.

Yes.

Yes, from what I've read here, if you go to Buffalo, you walk out ready to land. By mail is 14 business days last I heard.

This is not right.....What is the different between NJ (Local Police Check) and FBI check?
Do Police Stations do record check, if so what is the need for FBI Check.

FBI is all they require to start the PR process, but they can request state specific checks.

It used to be you had to send the FBI and state checks from all states you lived in over 6 months, but they loosened it up.

The FBI and state checks can differ quite a bit. My FBI check shows a charge that was dismissed over 10 years ago - but the state the charge was in? That check is clear (no record). I sent it in with my FBI check cause I knew they'd request it!

So you would be better off sending both In the first place just to be safe and to avoid any further delays.

Only FBI checks are mandatory. Sometimes they will ask for the State certificates as well (most of the time they don't). My husband and I decided to include State certificates in addition to the FBI certificate with our original application to avoid any delays. But this was purely a personal choice. Chances are they won't ask for the State certs.

If you don't have a clear record, yes. If the record is clear, I don't think it's necessary.

I got introuble when I was a minor (stupid kid) but nothing as an adult and have been approved for work visas In Canada with no problem. So hopefully they dont need It because Im In Canada now and It will be a big hassle to get It.

I thought it just for any country you have live in for 6months not state. Bcos the state cannot provide you any Police Check only the FBI can.

You can obtain police certificates from individual US states as well. We obtained 4 for my husband.

Every US state can provide a police check. And the CIC will want to see them if they have a reason (not clear FBI check)

Shouldn't be too bad, just go to where ever you can get fingerprints there for those, and send them with whatever form the state police requires and payment and they can send it back. You might want to call and make sure there's no additional fee for sending it out of the country, but it shouldn't difficult to actual obtain - just time consuming.

Oh ok, basically will the person have to travel to the state to get it or mail it in just like that of FBI?

Sure they can, or at least the State of Michigan was able to in my case. It was also much quicker to get back a response from the State than it was the FBI, too. :)

No - you don't have to travel to the US. My husband obtained all four of his while living as a visitor in Canada. They were way easier to obtain than the FBI cert.
