I have a US car and am really confused as to what I should do.

I know I have to have it there for 3 business days in order to export. Can I go next Tuesday, drop it off and get a rental, pick up my Visa and claim it as goods to follow? Then pick it up on Friday and drive it back over? Or would it be best to wait the following week (Id do next week but Monday is a holiday and I know they are strict about it being 3 business days) drop it off on Monday, come back over still as a visitor, and then do my Visa on Thursday?

Ahhhhhhh!

Also, does anyone have the best link for all the paperwork and info? My head is spinning so much I can't really follow.
The vehicle does NOT have to be over there for 72 hours....all you have to do is fax the Title to the US immigration 72 hours before you import it....

I have just called the US Customs as well as the Canada customs for our vehicle...neither side cares whether the vehicle is over there for 72 hours, as long as the paperwork (title) is there 72 hours in advanced of exporting it from the US.

http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx

That is the website and the phone number is awesome....my suggestion is that you do need a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer...GM wanted $360 for them to do it, we went to the GM dealership here where we live and they did it for free.....

We are faxing it today and landing on Saturday!!!

Congrats on the PPR!!!

I just called the US Customs Vehicle import hotline for Buffalo and it gives all the instructions :) It's 716-285-3565. It seems super easy. Good Luck!!

Start of a very good week for Buffalo - I just got my PPR as well!!!!! Nearly fell off the sofa.... my husband started his job today, was enjoying my first real day of housewifery and now I gotta get out.

So now comes an onslaught of questions. I am about 40 minutes away from Buffalo so am planning on going there for the Visa. I have a US car and am really confused as to what I should do.

I know I have to have it there for 3 business days in order to export. Can I go next Tuesday, drop it off and get a rental, pick up my Visa and claim it as goods to follow? It seems like it. I'm going to go to a GM dealership and see if they will order a Recall clearance letter (for Canada requirements) so I'll be prepared when I get my PPR hopefully in the next month. I'm so happy for you that your wait is over. :D

this is frustrating as hell, don't the managers know that there is a backlog of applications? Don't they know first come first serve basis of order? No wonder govt. offices are looked down upon all over the world, no sense of order at all.

Sorry, its me again.

Sent the e-mail to Buffalo in regards to exporting my car which is all you need to do 72 hours prior, but in the reply it reads in large lettering:

Vehicles for export may not be brought to Canada or currently be in Canada prior to being formally exported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Failure to comply with the requirements set forth in 19 CFR 192.2 may result in a penalty action.

Umm, mine is in Canada now. I was going to go land Tuesday. should I drop the car in Buffalo and rent one anyway???? It doesnt give a time frame?

You know what, I agree with you. One of the people getting PPRs in the last 24 hrs. or so was a December, but then there are three who are February and (mid) March. As happy as I am that later filing people are getting PPR because it means I may be next, I know it does not exactly smack of fairness (even though yes, it's true, we don't the know the individual circumstances of each and every case/application) when you have people who have been waiting since 2010 even, and I'd be mad if I were them too. CIC's "processed in the order it was received" claim seems to be on shakier and shakier ground in my book - I hope someone puts the heat on them in their next audit as to why this is the case.

You may want to call and tell them you are in Canada on a Visitor's visa. When I crossed at Sarnia, the agent told me it was no problem to bring my car in and I would do the import when I crossed back in after getting the PR visa. Please let me know what you find out. Thanks!

Hi,

I just called and the agent was VERY firm. He said that some agents will waive the penalty and some will not. At this juncture I'm really not in the mood for any snags.

I am going to pick up my Visa on Thursday, drive to Lewiston with my papers, get a rental for the long weekend, claim the car as goods to follow and then pick up the car on Tuesday. Its a pain, but its what I have to do. Unless anyone has any other suggestions?

I agree too with the lack of fairness. I've noticed there are some Buffalo March applicants who received PPRs in 2 to 3 months. It doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of is applicants like myself who are older and have more life history therefore more backround to check. Also I'm thinking it may be due to being divorced and time taken to check with court records (even though an original divorce document was included with the app.) Who knows!! I also have a job offer and they ask for time estimate updates and I can't give them anything!!
