That's great, it was pretty quick 2 days after it got posted, even though they've used the Registered Post, and not the Express.

Well so your wait for everything has come to an end, and you are on your way to securing the summer with wife :) Summer starts June 21 :), but it feels like its already here....

DNT2003
Thanks DNT. I guess it helps that my wife is in New Delhi :)

quick question....u can have the surname change here also....before u get the canadian pp....i mean when the spouse lands in canada...after the PR process...u can have the change of last name process started?

btw...how much time does it usually takes to change??? any idea???
Yes, avibis is correct..it is easy to change the wife's surname here in Canada and it is not considered a legal name change, marriage name change is different.
You can contact service ontario once you land to change all your canadian documents changed with your spouse's surname, its easy and seamless..
and it can always be changed back to the maiden name when desired...

the pain is when you try to change your indian passport name change here in Toronto..it is a big, frustrating and annoying process..
after what i am going through now i am really not in a mood to deal with any indian embassies period :)

So options are...
Change passport in India - make sure PR card has the same name...depends on when you sent the application and when you changed the name in Indian PP
Maintain same name in Indian PP - Land & do not change PR name
Land - Change Indian PP, Change PR card...( time consuming )
or wait...till you get a Canadian PP and change that during citizenship application ( easy and usually straight forward )

Changing Your Name

Privacy notice: Legal name changes are published in the Ontario Gazette.
How do I assume or unassume a married name?

Getting married? You don’t have to change your last name legally — which means changing your birth certificate. You can simply assume your spouse’s last name, or combine both of your last names into a hyphenated last name.

You can use your marriage certificate to make the change on all your other identification (driver’s licence, health card, passport, social insurance number (SIN) card, banks, etc).

Most people choose this option because:

It is free.
It is easily reversible.
There is no long application process.

The benefit of assuming a married name instead of doing a legal name change is that it does not change your last name on your birth certificate.

Later, if you wish to use your own last name again, it is already on your birth certificate and you won’t have to pay to change it back.

Fees
No fee required.

Service delivery time
You will be given a transaction record when you go to your nearest ServiceOntario Centre. You can continue to use your existing ID until your new health card and driver’s licence arrive in the mail about 4 to 6 weeks later.

How do I apply to assume my partner’s name?
You can make your name changes in person at your local ServiceOntario Centre.

What do I need to bring to make ID changes?

To assume: Your marriage certificate.
To unassume: Your birth certificate and your marriage certificate or divorce certificate.
Your current Ontario photo ID (health card and/or driver’s licence).
If you do not already have a photo health card, you must also bring three original documents to prove citizenship, Ontario residence and identity.
A Change of Information form.

Lets keep our eyes on the IPS, one of these days we'll hear the good news :)

Pretty sure it makes no diff, but to some officer it could mean plus points when they see the names on the passport etc.. just my 2 cents.

It would be a big hassle if we were to change the names on passport here in Canada, the process sucks!!! and takes foorever....

That's why I'd rather file the application 20-30 days and take care of the name change and apply for everything after...

I dont think it makes a difference at all... My passport has no changes, not even an endorsement to include spouse's name in the passport. I recently got a new Passport and had enough of hassles running around for it with the VFS without having to go back to the passport office to change things on it yet again. ND i suppose doesnt look at that if u look at my example...

I did want to take this route initially, but when I spoke to few people who've gone through same thing, 1 person said he gave up getting it done here and kept wife's father name with his wife, because he was given hard time.

So at that moment I made up my mind about getting it changed everything in India, and the rest will be just easy

Is it important for any reason to change the name at all? as in are there any repercussions? I dont think i want to go through the hassles of changing anything anymore.. have had enough with these authorities, embassy etc but will do it if there is some reason to do it.... Is is sufficient to have all documents with the same name or does it eventually warrant a name change... (the official or unofficial kinds?? )

This is another method that can work too, and true about the personal preference, in my case I didn't want to see the father name with my wife because its huge name, I'd rather have my 5 char :p

Changing the wife's surname on a passport is just a personal preference...just make sure that surname on the PR Card/ Passport matches.
In my case i am not changing the Indian Passport and when she gets a Canadian Passport in 4 years that is when i will be making the change...
Until then i do not plan to make the change in the PR card but she will have my surname on her SIN, Licence, Health Card & Banking info ( this can be done with the original marriage certificate when you apply )

This again looks to be like a slow week..next weekend is a long weekend...i hope they move things fast in the next few days.
All the best everyone...

In this part of the world (Canada) my opinion stands with the fact that there is no economical benefit at all... its just how you want the name of your spouse, for my case I felt my name should go with my wife name, and she even wanted that so we both decided to change, and there are people who wouldn't want to change the name at all, all is acceptable.

But one question does come to my mind..... when wife has the baby and in the hosbital they usually put mother name on it..

so is it possible that the nurse / doctor might put the name of the baby this way
BABY-NAME MOTHER-NAME (MOTHER FATHER NAME), LASTNAME

see what I mean, can that happen?

Or would the doctor use BABY-NAME MOTHER-NAME, LASTNAME

Wow DNT…already thinking that far 
It really doesn’t matter how they name the baby in the hospital. The band they put around the baby ‘s wrist is only for identification and it would usually say Baby-mother’s name(mother’s first and last name).
You can name the baby however you want it… ie: baby name-father’s last name/ baby name-mother’s last name/ baby name-mother’s first and father’s first name….It’s your choice!!!
And this info goes in to the baby’s file and whatever you put in there as the baby’s name is how it’ll appear on his/her birth certificate.
@avibis: Congratulationsssss!!!! I can imagine how happy you might be!!!
My e-cas still says ‘Application Received’…. :S I’m hitting the 3rd mnth(frm the time my application was sent to CPC) this weekend. … it’s been almost a mnth since we sent the additional docs they wanted. I was looking for an interview to be scheduled, but that doesn’t show up either…not sure what’s going on!!!!

You are right, name change is not mandatory..but as i said

For your above statement, the most important thing is that the Indian PP should match the PR card, if not there will be huge delays @ airport & about explaining this to immigration officers when you enter your country.

Reg SIN, Health, License - you can use any name..and change it anytime you want..as i mentioned this is NOT a legal name change and it is very straightforward if you do it in Canada..no fee, no publications etc...

Haahaha well yes i guess the personal preference bit is true.. in my case i dont want a name change at all if i can avoid it. the whole battling with embassies, passport offices etc has ensured that much to change it here itself there is a backlog and its taking months for people to get the passport. a simple PCC is taking almost 3 months so i wouldnt dare. the procedure in this state atleast is such a long and arduous process that i pity people who have to apply for anything at the passport office. its not just CIC ND that is unpredictable, anything involving processing of papers is hard enough. Besides i dont c whats wrong in sporting the same name because it isnt getting any smaller. as for the baby name things i guess u can name the baby whatever u want and thats what is printed on the birth certificate and registered.

If she lands here with her old last name on the passport and visa, the PR card will be issued in that old last name. In that event, it is not advisable to get the last name changed in passport as that will create a lot of issues while travelling. Agree with fprince to wait until when his wife gets Canadian passport as then the PR card would be taken and it wouldn't matter anymore.

thanks avibis
