Deva,

It sounds like you and your wife have not yet found one of the many programs designed for "international medical graduates" (foreign-trained doctors) to help them make the transition in Ontario or Canada. It is shocking to me that no one has been able to give you good advice.

You should start here:

Hi Deva

Certainly a sad tale and hope things look up soon for you. I am curious about one thing , You mentioned that you could only carry 8000 dollars and not 20,000, so how did you manage to avoid showing the IO at landing that you only had 8000 dollars with you and not the 20,000 as is required.

cheers

Sisifo, "proof of funds" can still be a bank account statement when you land, you do not have to carry that with you.

I am saddened upon reading this post. However, as some seniors had said on other threads we have to take survival jobs and you know go a little lower than what we are used to in our own country. My heart goes out to Dr Deva, but don't discourage, there is still a lot of chance to make use of your PRV, you are now in Canadian soil (not like me and many other - still waiting). Stay positive and always remember you are still blessed than most.

God bless you in your next step.

There are many professional like doctors who go to abroad for better opportunities and end up working as taxi drivers or delivery boys with few only managing to earn a name for themselves.

Amritsar-born Birinder Ahluwalia is one of those lucky ones who didn’t let anything crush his overseas dreams. He is a physician and his BSA Diagnostic Medical Imaging Centre in Canada is amongst the top-rated Healthcare Institute of the country.

Ahluwalia‘s centre treated around seventy thousand patients which is a record in itself and they are expecting to have more patients this year. He further claims that there must be hardly any other medical centre which handles so many patients. He has also started a festival called Spinning Wheel Film Festival in the city. For his contribution in his field and culture promotion, he has secured a place for himself amongst the top twenty-five immigrant achievers. He has also been invited by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to accompany him for his trip to India last year.
But it’s not been a smooth sailing for Ahluwalia who has had his share of ups and downs in his journey. He started his life from the bottom slowly reaching to the top by taking one step at a time. Ahluwalia arrived in Canada with his doctorate degree from India but he started working as courier boy. But his gloomy days didn’t last long because he made quick moves and from a courier boy, he became the Assistant to the Chief of the RDS Diagnostics and then later got trained as a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist.
Later, he opened a small clinic and named it as BSA Diagnostic Imaging Centre in the 1989. Since then, he only moved forward and never looked back. Toronto is slowly gaining a reputation of having more numbers of immigrant doctors working as taxi drivers which speaks aloud about the plight of overseas professionals in Canada.

This is a small story of Amritsar born physician who made it happen despite having many difficulties in his way. But his story is an eye opener for many young professionals who have a rosy-picture about working in a foreign country where they would be offered everything from money to house in a platter. But that’s not the way things are in reality! And one must really prepare and work hard before planning to settle abroad because their might be many challenges awaiting for you there.

I want to thank everybody for your very useful comments. I am overwhelmed by the sympathy and empathy shown by some of you. When I decided to post my original comments on my experience about Canada I was worried because I did not want to hurt any of your feelings and also I did not want to influence the decision made by you. I believe Canada is the best country in the world in any perspective you consider and I strongly believe my decision to move to Canada was a right one. Today I want to share with you a very good news. I have got a job, of course a survival one. This will help me not only to survive but also prepare for my licensing examinations and pay the fees. I completely agree with most of the comments you made. I did not know a lot about the difference that exists among the provincial licensing processes for immigrant doctors in Canada. There are many immigrant doctors living in Toronto and everyday new doctors are coming here. So, there are more immigrant doctors in Toronto than any other province in Canada, waiting for opportunity to obtain a residency position in the hospitals, and the residency is a must for the licensing process. Many of these doctors are very qualified and skilled with many years of experience in their own fields and most of them have already passed the several examinations required for the licensing process in Canada. One advantage for foreign doctors in Toronto is that there are more residency positions in the province of Ontario(Toronto is the capital) than any other province and also there are many academic and study groups in Toronto which helps a newcomer doctor for preparation for the licensing examinations. There are more than three examinations which an international medical graduate needs to pass before he or she can apply for the residency position in hospitals. We also landed in Toronto for the same reason. Now about the job situation, many doctors and engineers are doing jobs at factories, and security jobs and at the same time preparing for the examinations. I also considered working in those positions. But I decided to obtain a job in sales position and customer service in a department store because I thought it would give me the opportunity to talk to many people and will allow me to learn the occupational language and at the same time make me able to deal with customers and people. I also believed that my long experience of patient care would help me in customer service job. I tried and at last I managed to get a job in a famous superstore which I believe will allow me to talk to many people and learn their culture. In my last posting I described the wonderful human beings that I have seen in many school teachers and people involved in community and charity organizations. I want to conclude saying that Canada is the best country in the world and the people of Canada are the most beautiful and wonderful people on the earth.

Deva....I really feel relieved........

I am not sure if I am correct.....I suggest you to move to a smaller town where expenditures are less....this will give more room for you to prepare for the exam...staying in Toronto or Toronto GTA is certainly expensive...for example you can take a rental apt at Ajax which is atleast 10-15 % cheaper ..but at the same time I understand you need to think of good schools in that area for your kids......

Do some more research and before making any decision to move then make sure u get a survivol job there first and plan accordingly....

Congrats for your job and all the best. I am also in Toronto ..so if you need any assistance I can be reached anytime.....PM me and if needed I can provide you my cellphone number.....

I had an impression before that as an IMG, once you passed their MCCEE, you can now be placed or try applying for a temporary permit to practice, and has at least 3 years to pass the MCCQE part 1 and 2..now, MCCEE is offered in other countries also, so if your planning on moving to canada you can take one in your country, but to be eligible you have to send all your credentials to credentialing office accredited by MCC. can anyone comment on this..coz this is how I understood in what I read in the MCC website.
