Hi everyone,

What is roughly the total cost if sponsoring a spouse for PR in Canada? That is excluding lawyers.

Thank you :)

Hi

Roughly $1500.

The applications fees are $1040. The medical is generally around $300, though that can jump way up outside of Canada. Other costs cam include PCCs, mailing the app, any documents that need to be obtained/notarized/translated, paper/ink etc.

You mention lawyers - why do you think you might need the incur the considerable extra cost of using them for a spousal sponsorship?

The process, forms and supporting documents required may appear daunting at first sight, but are pretty straightforward once you get into them if you approach it in a calm, logical manner. Most people I have spoken to have done this themselves without lawyers (including me). The generally accepted wisdom is that lawyers are only needed if your case is likely to be complex (criminal record etc.).

It varies a lot. My cost all in is now about $20,000. Many others have spent more. Imagine 4 or more years of travel , maybe lawyer fees, some people even lose the one they love. So, different for everyone.

$20,000 for the application not including lawyers, flights back and forth etc? Do you mean $2,000?

I could understand 20k if you were flying from India to Canada and back a few times a year plus using a lawyer but for the application side of things I can't ever see it going over $2000.

As mentioned about $1040 for the fees, plus medicals, police certs, postage, printing costs.

!!!!! How?

I mean, actually, how can you spend that much on filling some forms, paying a courier, printing some photos, and paying a $1,040 fee?

Unless you have a horribly complicated case, involving lawyers actively working for several years (in which case, frankly, you would know going into it that you wouldn't qualify), how could a person possibly spend anywhere close to that amount on it?

Trips, translations, etc. The lawyer we consulted with told us $10-$13 k after all was done. And our case is pretty simple.

I cant really see why I'd need a lawyer though. I have no criminal background, and I'm from an English speaking country (no need for a translator)

The only problem I can foresee is that we have not been married too long, and we don't have tons of evidence.

Just shared lease, photo's, messages, both have fairly decent jobs. However from what I've read, it seems like pot luck in regard to what immigration officer you get.

Mr profiler is right ain't cheap darling

You really don't need a lawyer. The majority of us did the process on our own.

1500 is reasonable. I thought it would be much more.

And why someone would pay 20k to move country is beyond me!

I had a simpler case than most but not a given by any means. I contemplated getting a lawyer, but after reading this forum religiously for a few month before starting the application and constantly referring back to it during the process, I'm so happy I saved 5-8k in lawyer fees.

People on here are more knowledgable than most lawyers! I hear horror stories constantly.

I suggest you do it yourself, and save the money for when you land. Unless your case is super complex, then speak with a lawyer first.

FYI: I contacted what is considered the top immigration lawyer in Canada and they quoted $9,000 to do the full thing.

To clarify, here on the forum, "landing" specifically means becoming a PR. If you are here on a work permit, you have not landed.
