Hi all,

I am sponsoring my wife to come live in Alberta with me. I need to buy her temporary health insurance to cover her until she gets her Alberta Health Card.

Can anyone recommend any health insurance for this? What kind of insurance do I need to show the people at the border when crossing with her?

Thanks,

I usually start with Kanetix, as it compares multiple insurance carriers. You would just look under the "visitors to Canada" insurance section.

In most cases visitors health insurance is not a mandatory requirement, it's optional. So the immigration people won't care if you have it or not (I know there are some "super visa" insurance requirements but i think this is just for specialty parents/grandparents applications and nothing to do with regular spousal sponsorship).

Its your choice to have temporary health insurance before you can use the State Health Care System. You DONT have to show any kind of health insurance to the border people when crossing as its not MANDATORY....Good luck

I believe if the wife is landing she will be able to get health care thru Alberta right away... atleast worth looking into..

Moving to Alberta from outside Canada / immigrants

If you are moving or returning to Alberta from outside Canada, you might be eligible for coverage on the date of your arrival. You must register within 3 months of arrival. Newcomers to Canada are required to present a copy of their Canada entry document along with their other supporting documents.

I concur. You can add her to yours as a dependant right away. When my husband added me, they didn't even ask for proof I'd been in Alberta for 3 months.

Cool cool. My fiance has insurance through work and I was hoping he could add me right off.

I wouldn't worry about finding temporary health insurance. My wife and I just recently applied for her Alberta Health Card and she had it within a week. We just went into a registry office, explained the situation and the sent off the application. In and out in 10 minutes. She also just sent off the application to Alberta Blue Cross and should be added to my account any day now.

Yeah, I just noticed :). My apologies. Yeah, my fiance works in Quebec. Thank you on both counts. I'll have him look at his plan.
