Study permit - family ties in Canada and country of residence

My study permit was refused on the grounds of family ties in Canada and country of residence. I am Indian currently working in UAE. My question in particular is: how do one prove family ties in Canada? Is it mandatory for a SP applicant to have family ties in Canada to study there? But in this forum I also noticed that it actually weakens the application. So why do they refuse an application who have not demonstrated a family tie in Canada?
I only have heard from my parents that we have some distant relatives in Canada but no clue who they are and which part of Canada they live. I do have a couple of friends though (ex-colleagues) who are permanent residents and or citizens in Canada. I didn't think to mention them in my application. Do you think I should have mentioned them? Will that serve the purpose of 'family ties in Canada'? I am kind of clueless with this reason of refusal.

Not having family ties in Canada is good for study permit profile. It seems that you have failed to show stronger ties with country of residence i.e. UAE

I have got two brothers with their families in UAE. Both working. Their details were given in the family declaration form.

Family ties in Canada not necessarily means you have a family in Canada (or should have for visa), it's a combined statements with the country of residence as well. Since you are an Indian living in UAE, that automatically shows you have weaker ties to India (not to UAE since you are just a temp resident). You will have to show stronger ties to India instead of UAE in order to pass this refusal line. If you have investments and/or property in India or your parents or business, that will establish your ties to home country so that when the studies are done, you can go back to India (not to UAE, since you can abolish your residency after study visa).

As for India - my parents are residing in India and we visit them almost every year. I didn't show their property documents as I have my own. I showed my own property document, insurance, FD, bank statements, driving license, pan card etc, etc ...what more can I show?

All in UAE or India? You can show your parents residing in India and property of parents. If you have property and funds in India, do show them as well.

All in India. UAE I showed employment letter, bank statement, pay stubs, medical insurance.... I know UAE ties will not be counted stronger as we are not citizens here..

My ties to India and UAE were well documented. Hence my doubt that I might have failed to show ties in Canada. And how relevant is that for a study permit.

It also depends on the previous education and proposed study plan. What is your profile?

No ties with Canada is not an issue here. They want to know the strong ties with your home country/country of residence as well. That will be like an assurance that you will go back to your country after completing the program. Your family ties are weaker as you are already staying away from your parents . And your brothers too can take care of your parents in your absence in the future. It is easy for you to immigrate to Canada without thinking much about parents as you are likely to visit them yearly as usual. In other words, you won’t return after studies.

Example of stronger ties: being the only son to take care of parents, family business to be taken care of, significant property under your names...these could be solid reasons for coming back to home country. Also show the jobs/roles you will get in some specific companies after you complete your studies.

family ties in Canada and country of residence is one statement.

They are not just asking you about your family ties in Canada. Don't make up your own statements.

Thank you AndyT. It does make some sense now. My parents and my own property, FD, life and property insurance, bank savings, ID's are the only ties I have in India that I can show as of now. I did mention in my SOP the list of multi national healthcare companies operating in India including the one that I currently work for. If I ever re-apply in future I will consider these points you mentioned.

Bachelors in Commerce (2006) - India. Started working since then. 13+ years of work experience. 11 years working as customer operations specialist under Supply Chain Dept. Opted to do a diploma in BA majoring in Supply chain Management. But coming to think of it I should have opted for a PG in operations/supply chain or International Business trade management as my role is more in line with this.
