Cross posting.. already posted in another thread, Posting here for better response.USA insurance companies may not cover the insurance for long if you are driving in Canada.
And as per canada law, the minimum is 1 million liability. And in USA, coverage is pretty less.
Parking tickets dont count as points.Cross posting.. already posted in another thread, Posting here for better response.
I have heard that insurance is pricey in Canada and people show US insurance history to get some discount. Unfortunately I happened to have two parking lot claims (both minor claims with any cop involvement, but at fault..one by me and another by my spouse) in last three months. We might move after 1-2 years to Canada and I believe claims stay on record for 3 years. So should I skip showing US history to Canadian insurance companies? Do Canadian insurance verify US insurance history too by any chance?
I think you missed my point. I mentioned minor collision insurance claims at parking lots without any cop involvement. Like hitting pole by mistake/scratching near by car.. Not parking lot tickets.Parking tickets dont count as points.
Again, having insurance in USA wont do much help here in canada... their policies are too bad.... and the discounts are just 10-20$
Not at all an issue unless u have points in your history...I think you missed my point. I mentioned minor collision insurance claims at parking lots without any cop involvement. Like hitting pole by mistake/scratching near by car.. Not parking lot tickets.
I was told at the first booth that you drive through that I'd have to import the car but that's not where anything really happens so if that happens to you, be patient and wait to talk to the people actually inside at customs. Once I was in there, the woman who helped us acted like having to import the car right then was absurd since we wouldn't be able to use it in the US between then and our actual permanent move, so it was a non-issue at that point. Even if she'd had the wrong idea like the person at the booth, there were other workers there who helped each other if there were any uncertainties and it would have been resolved. The main point is - it's totally okay to wait until your permanent move to import your car, and some border agents may not realize that, but it should be able to be worked out even then. *If* there's a misunderstanding, just stay calm and ask for them to consult other border agents. And if it happens at the booth like with us, just say something like "okay, we'll deal with it over there in customs."This thread has been very useful but i have a slightly different situation, i will be doing a soft landing within a week and wanted to confirm the following if someone can help.
1. I have a car with shared ownership, between me and another relative , can i use this car to do a soft landing and not import the car at that time? i read somewhere that the CBSA does not like it if you are doing soft landing and not importing the car at that time. any experience?
2. The second car i have is leased but it has temporary plates at the moment, can i use this car for the landing without importing.
Please share your feedback as i need to decide quickly between using one of my cars or may be take a rental this time.?
Thank you!.. I want to import the car permanently to avoid the later headache, with work permit can we import car permanentlyOn WP, you can take your car on temporary import which means no duties. The tricky part is what happens when you change from WP to PR as the car would no more be illegible for temporary import. As per rules you need to do a permanent import which means an export from USA and that might be tricky or simple depending on whether you need Visa(if you are not a GC or Citizen) to go back to USA or not. I dont have much clarity on that.
I am in same boat. Check this thread

USA will allow you to export car permanently, but Canada will "most probably" allow only temporary import due to your temporary work status.Thank you!.. I want to import the car permanently to avoid the later headache, with work permit can we import car permanently
So If import my car temporarily can I later change it to permanent import once I get my PR?USA will allow you to export car permanently, but Canada will "most probably" allow only temporary import due to your temporary work status.
Hi everyone, we will be crossing the borders in April ...I would like to clarify couple thinks if anyone can help me with this questions.Me and my husband are planing to travel to New Brunswick. Both lost the status in USA (we start to work on moving to Canada since 2013, that time we had work authorization) and recently both got COPR for Canada. My main concern if will have any problem crossing the borders. We are planing to take our car with us. We got the title for the car.I do have the I-94 which I need to gave them at the borders by my knowledge, my husband doesn't have the I-94. From this forum threat this what I got: USA borders for export.
1) AES pay 75$; 2) receive INT and send with PoA Title to the borders; 3) wait 72 hours before the export the car; 4) at the borders present (title, insurance, registration,SED with ITN.) What about EEI? Anything I'm missing at the USA borders.?

1) Recall clearance letter; 2) Vehicle Import form; 3) RIV Fee $350; I think I need to do more research on Canada Borders. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you very much.
