Hello everyone,
So our story is like this :
My girlfriend and I decided to move to Canada about a year ago, she has a dad who lives in Calgary and after a short procedure she got her PR.
I came here seven days ago and now we are getting married in two weeks and hoping to start my PR procedure as well.
Any tips for us on how to do it? Should we get a lawyer or is it possible to do it by ourselves? What's the best way to show that our relationship is genuine? And all kind of tips are welcome :).
I thank everyone for any kind of help or advice.

You don't need a lawyer unless you have a lot of red flags in the relationship.
Did you and your girlfriend live together for one year before she came to Canada?

If they are getting married in two weeks, shouldn't they abandon any idea of applying [now] as Common-Law?

It will take them a few weeks to even prepare their application and since spousal sponsorship is easier than Common-Law sponsorship (in terms of `proof' needed)...it seems like a moot point.

I agree; no lawyer needed if it's a true relationship with little, or no, red flags.

The part that I'm curious about is how she obtained her PR after a `short procedure'?!?!

Congratulations and good luck!

I honestly have no idea what the rules are for being a PR and sponsoring a spouse, so I will let someone else help you with that.

But for genuine relationship:

Gather all your emails, text messages, phone logs (a coupe of each per month, but if you have a 10 year relationship maybe less to avoid hundreds of millions of pages) and arrange them chronologically, form when you met till when you apply, and keep going after the application is sent

If you have lived together, show proof of leasing together, joint credit card statements, and address for both for that period of time

Photos of events and trips and other stuff WHERE EVERYBODY IS SMILING SO THEY CAN SEE HOW MUCH FUN YOU HAVE TOGETHER and with friends and family, I used TimeToPhoto to tag the photos with with time and date

After your are wed, have her create a Canada Revenue Agency account, where she adds you as a spouse, and print that out!

At the wedding, not sure what nationality you have, but if in your culture there are 300-400 people at a wedding, CIC expect that. If you are American, Western European, etc, they don't seem to care if only a few attend. Take tons of photos of you all smiling and having a good time, no frowning or stone faces! Have people sign some board at the wedding where they can mention what an amazing couple you two are, and take a photo of that. Wedding invitation can be saved, photo of your gifts.

Also, you need friends and family to write you at least two letters where they say:
1. Who they are, and how they know you two
2. Times they have spent together with you
3. How genuine your relationship is and how supportive you are of each other yada yada

Name, phone number, address for contact if they want to
Signed by them

(A tip, send that list to people you think would write you a letter, by hand or on the computer)

Two (2) letters HAVE to be notarized, just google for someone who can notarize letters in your area. It cost me 96 dollars. I had three extra letters from friends and family too, just not notarized. It would be good if the people writing the letters are seen in photos with you.

If you think there are any red flags in your case, like a big age difference, or one has 10 kids and don't want anymore but the partner might want some of their own, address that in the essay you will write on the development of your relationship, plus of course the development of the relationship.

Don't get a lawyer unless you cannot read and don't know english. In case you have a very tricky situation nd your case is not stra8 forward, maybe consult a lawyer, but this forum is very helpful.

I used this thread for all my organization tips, but don't be scared of how much she submitted, she is loco! Lol I only had about 100 pages of proof, and many have had much less.

And, of course, get a police clearance and birth certificate NOW! they can take quite a while to get depending on where you are from.

Just to clarify the 2 notarized letters thing is ONLY for common-law, and even then it's only required for applicants from certain countries.
So while letters from family/friends are always good proofs to include, for married couples they don't need to be notarized.

Wow guys thank you so much for such replies, about th e fast pr she got its a sponsorship by her father so it took like 7 months, the relationship is true of course so no red flags at all, just two 23 and 25 years old looking to start a better life then in Israel, unfortunately we didn't lived together in an apartment because of an economic situation but I know her since the age of 14 so we have a lot of photos together.

1. Should I try the Inland application?
2. What kind of tests they do to check on the relationship? Just wanna be prepared as best as we can.

Again ty all

I asked this because if they had lived together for a year or more before the girlfriend landed, they would have been common law and she should have declared him as her common-law spouse. If they were common law, but she did not declare it, she wouldn't be able to sponsor him now, even if they got married.

But since they did not live together, this is not an issue.

Excellent point. Good thing it doesn't apply to her. *Whew*! That would have been tragic!!

You can certainly use the Inland application as soon as you are married. Do you plan to keep your legal status (please say yes)? Even though an Inland applicant can still apply, regardless of their legal status, it does NOT (in and of itself) guarantee that you would not be deported before your sponsor has been approved (AIP), which is now taking ~ 9-10 months.

Nobody knows for sure what kinds of `tests' CIC conducts in evaluating your relationship, but feel free to search this forum for words like `proof' or `evidence' to get some of the general things that have been discussed (all of the obvious things that you've likely already thought about).

Good luck!

Ok thanks! I didn't know that.

Sorry...I meant HIS legal status, if you plan to be together in Canada during the process. Even with an Outland application, you can both be physically present in Canada for the entire process...provided he has and maintains legal visitor status.

It may/may not be `better' to apply Outland, but it still seems to be a little bit faster (although Inland applications are screaming right along now!).

There is no guarantee that his application will be processed in Ottawa because he is Israeli. They might ship his application over seas to whomever handles Israel, which would take longer than Ottawa. The only way to know the application would stay in Canada is to file and Inland application.

Tel Aviv is only 10 months, so not too bad for outland.

Any idea if I will be able to file for a temp work permit while I am waiting?
And about the Inland, isn't it a none appeal procedure?
