I haven't been asked to cancel my UAE residency but we left the UAE for Canada in June 2015 and cancelled our visas before we left.

when they requested the passport for visa issuance, did you send the passport back to Abu Dhabi or you sent it to Ottawa
My wife is in the same situation, she will be cancelling her UAE visa and will be moving with me soon, she have a TRV valid till 2019.
Did you notify the embassy that you are moving to Canada?

Hi,
I sent mine to Ottawa. The PDF attached to the email said that if we were in Canada and likely to be so for at least 3 months then we could send to Ottawa instead of AD.

We didn't notify anyone that we were moving to Canada. My husband cancelled mine and the children's residence visas then his company cancelled his. We did this 2-3 weeks before we left and stayed on the 30 day grace period just to make sure we weren't doing it at the last minute.

I updated my address on ecas so if they did send anything by mail then it would come to our house here in Canada.

Have you received the email yet? It seems to be a standard thing on the email rather than aimed at me specifically. I assumed that it appeared on everyone's email.

No they didnt. All they asked was for passport submission to ADVO.
My concern is how much will they give my spouse in terms of visa validity considering the medical expires today.

I am not sure this is rear case maybe they will give medical extension like a week or a month.

Im afraid that they might not give us the option to submit the passport to Ottawa and we'll have to fly back to the UAE to submit the passport

I would expect you get the same option as me.

Mine says:

So it would seem that if you provide a pre-paid return option with Aramex they will send to you wherever you are in the world/ Otherwise, do you have anybody trustworthy in the UAE who could send it on to you?

Sorry, that's only part of it. I C&P the bit that seems to suggest you can send it to ADVO from overseas. Mine also said:

If you and all the accompanying dependents on your application are currently in
Canada and plan to be in Canada for at least three months, you may submit your
passport(s) and other required documents to the Case Processing Centre – Ottawa
(“CPC-O”). You are required to send your passport(s) together along with a copy of
this letter by mail or courier to the following address:
If sent by regular mail or Canada Post Xpresspost (recommended option)
CPC – Ottawa
PO Box 9780
Ottawa, ON, K1G 4B9
 Purchase two prepaid letter-sized (32 x 24 cm) Canada Post Xpresspost
envelopes (Regional if you live in Ontario or Quebec; National for other
provinces and territories), at any Canada Post retail outlet.
 Complete the mailing label showing your full mailing address in the “Deliver
To” field.
 Make a note of tracking numbers for each envelope.
