Hi all,

My Canadian Spouse currently has a food bank card. If immigration dredges this up, will it act against him when applying to sponsor me as a PR in Canada? Should we go in an cancel this or is it no big deal? He is not on any other sort of assistance.

Thanks!

What province is the card from?

Hmmm...your spouse has a food bank card, but in another thread, you indicate that you both plan to travel extensively?

If CIC gets wind of this, they might at least wonder how travel can take precedence over buying food.

Perhaps there is a customer service number on the back of the card,,you could call and cancel.

ah... good point. That's not going to look good. Does anyone know how to revoke a food bank card?

The only time someone as a food card is when they have low income or on social assistance..

I'm afraid that is a no go for spousal sponsorship..

make sure to check with your spouse what his real status because CIC will find out one way or another

low income is not an indicator of sponsorship approval, only social assistance is. my opinion is it will depend on what the option C form says. this is how they proof social assistance.

In the town that i live in you don't have to be on social assistance to get a food bank card or go. It is an open door any one can go and no questions asked .

and for the most part, aren't they mostly privately funded? i'm sure there is a public assistance food program, but my guess is most of them are private and don't report who uses their services to the government.

Ours are definitely privately funded, i don't know 100% about huge cities.

He was able to get his food bank card by proving he has low income. And that was a while ago, before he had a full time job. His option C form should show he's much more able to provide for my and himself at this point. Most food banks in my experience are operated through churches and private community groups, not government. Something like food stamps would be something different. I'm not sure that the people processing our application would even be able to find record of a food bank card, because it's not a government run thing. I'm pretty sure they didn't even give him a card, but I think they have a card with his name on file. But I still worry, hoping to find someone in a simmilar situation with some insight. I just don't want anything to go wrong in our application process that will hold it up. So tired of being apart *sigh*.

The information of Food bank is confidential and not shared with any one, it wont affect your sponsorship at all,
anyone can get food bank assistance when needed, This is not welfare assistance that is totally different.

So, don't worry about that,
