Once your fiance's PR application is approved, he will then have to officially land in Canada to become a PR. As soon as he has landed (i.e. even the same day) he can apply for his SIN and start working. :)

Thank you scylla! What exactly will he have to do to become landed? Is it as easy as him driving across the border with the approved paperwork, talking to immigration, and ta da? Or is there more to it?

When he gets to the border, he provides CBSA with his passport with the PR visa counterfoil affixed to it and the COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) provided by the embassy. He will have a landing interview (usually quite short) where he provides his Canadian address advising CBSA where to send the PR card and then he's done. They will void the PR visa and he takes that to Service Canada to apply for his SIN card. They will give him his SIN number right away and his SIN card will arrive in the mail a few weeks later but all he needs is the number in order to begin working. That's it.

BTW, if he is bringing his personal belongings with him (or at a later date) he needs to provide an accounting of these to CBSA. Please see the link to the form. http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/b4a.pdf If he's only bringing clothes and other small personal effects, this form is not necessary.

Other information about what he can and cannot bring and when he must declare it is available on the CBSA website. www.cbsa.gc.ca

Thank you! That's super helpful :)

What a great information. Thank you so much for posting it Leon! I do have a question though...

The sponsor can not be on social assistance, can not be bankrupt and can not have a record of violent crimes or crimes against family members. If that is the case, better talk to a lawyer and get that cleared up before attempting to apply.

What do you exactly mean with ''social assistance''? Is that the same as being on parole? My fiancé is a Canadian citizen and wants to sponsor me but he has a record and unfortunately it is a record of violent crimes but it wasn't against relatives. What do you advise me? We talked to the immigration officer and they said that this might bring up problems but we will know that until we start the sponsorship. What do you advise for us?

Thank you in advance!

Social assistance is welfare. Hope this helps.

We'll need more information to be able to help you.

When (month/year) did you obtain permanent residence status in Canada. And how did you obtain it?

kad14, as you didn't told anyone about your son I'm afraid you've just done a misrepresentation as he was not declared by you. Im so sorry :( but as I read this forum, I think you have a chance, cases like yours can be raised on H&C.. goodluck!

Well let me jump in with some questions :)

Anyone know if the website for immigration gets updated frequently?? Trying to check on my husbands status and we have a file # but when we enter it ... says they don't have anything for it. Applying through Kingston Jamaica.

Hello all,

I am a newly married guy and wanna sponsor and file my wife's PR now. I just gone through the process, and i am little confused about where do I send the documents first and do i send the complete package to CPC and the local country specific Visa center(New Delhi) simultaneously.

As I understand -
All the documents as stated - Part1,Part2 and Part3 under the spouse sponsoring application kit, must be sent to CPC Mississauga which will include even the region specific application (part3) and then once my sponsorship assessment is over THEY (CPC) will forward the application to region specific center(New Delhi). OR will they notify me with a letter to send the application to the region specific Visa center.

Also, when I send the complete package to Mississauga (should I also include the spouse medical examination done confirmation too or shall I wait for their letter asking to proceed for a medical exam once CPC get back to me after my sponsorship assessment).

Kindly Advice.

Many Thanks

Congrats on the marriage!

Send everything to Mississauga (including evidence of the completed medical). They will forward everything to New Delhi once they've finished their bit.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh got the PPR today Alhamdulillah and submitted it CHC Dhaka at 2.30 p.m..so had some happy rush hours for us..

I was learned later that e-cas can be updated on decision made even before visa stamped on Passport if there is no complication in the case. Mine was as straight as a stick may be even more than that ..thats why I guess they did updated mine e-cas before visa issuance..

I am going to book my ticket on March between 15-20 coz the lady told me it might take 8 weeks max to get back passport thats why I am taking 2 months on my hand ...FAIR ENOUGH I GUESS

Re: Stepson outside Canada!!

Hello Leon et al,

Please give me some feedback re my 14yo stepson who is still living in Cambodia with his grandmother.

I am a Canadian citizen, my Cambodian wife is living with me IN-Canada and we sent in the sponsor docs, PR, and visa extension back in Nov 2010. It wasn't clear to us at the time how long this was all going to take and now my wife is really feeling the absence of her son.

Is there any way I can bring him here before the PR process is completed. If I tried to get a visitors visa for him it would likely be refused since his mother is still waiting for an extension and overstayed already.

I don't see any way to soften this suffering for my wife. The grandmother caring for him is in poor health and we are worried about the boy's wellbeing.

We are considering sending him to stay with a relative in France until the PR is sorted out... kinda drastic but what else do we do.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
