What I am confused about is why would it be easier to file before we are married and not after? I don't want to misrepresent anything. I want to be honest and say that I want to bring my wife to Canada so we can visit my family and friends. There is no alterior motive. We are in NO hurry for the residency as I have a good job here in Mexico. We just want to visit Canada as I haven't been back for 6 years and she has never been.

In order for your wife to get a TRV, she would need to show that she intends to leave Canada after the TRV expires. For many people with a Canadian spouse, this is often hard to do if the spouse lives in Canada, since a visa officer may feel the strongest tie to the applicant is the spouse and they will end up staying in Canada illegally even after TRV expires.

Your case is a bit different since you both live in Mexico. So she would have a good chance to get TRV, even if married to you. You would need to show her ties to Mexico such as proof of ongoing employment, home ownership, the fact that you (spouse) are employed/live there full time, etc etc. Basically anything you can include that will show she will return to Mexico after TRV is done.

What is trv? how is it different from a tourist visa or is it the same? Would it be a good idea to apply for a multiple entry visa as we will probably want to visit Canada more than 1 time in the future?

Ya I'm just referring to the general visitor visa. TRV = temporary resident visa.

Yes you can apply for multi-entry visa if you want.

Awesome so is my husband.. we applied in late september though. Hopeful it wont take as long as some cases i am seeing.. Did you get the email or did she get it and as of when did you application status change to " in process" from " received application".. Thansk for your help.

Now as for showing ties to Mexico. She isn't working now as I make enought money for both of us. Would a letter from my company stating that I have a steady job here help? She owns a car. Would the deed for the car help? Showing her investments here in Mexico. Would that help?

If get married and then apply for the visa as per the point of view you already hold a canadian citizenship and having a canadian spouse why would some one leave him and go back to their home country? This make him think that applicant might over stay the valid visa and try to settle in Canada which anyways you are going to do. But as per the visit/tourist visa rules one should prove that he/she will be out of country before the visa validity.

In you case if married, she has almost no reason to go back to her country. If not married, you can show her parents, other ties in her country to prove she will go back for them.

Now you might ask, i was also in mexico working and i will also go back to mexico before her visa expires. VO may not buy that explantion.

But that is what will happen. For the moment we just want to go for a vacation. When we come back to Mexico then we will start the residency process. Will showing a letter from my employer here and the fact that we have a car here and apartment rental help to show our ties to Mexico?

Because the Canadian spouse has established residence and employment in Mexico, and can show this via a letter of employment, mortgage/lease contract, car ownership proof etc from Mexico. So there is no tie to Canada, the much stronger tie is to Mexico.

This his citizenship will be jeopardy?

Also although I am a Canadian citizen i am considered a non-resident of Canada now because I have been living and working in Mexico since 2008. Apart from family and friends I have no ties to Canada eg. house, car, bank account. Does that make our ties to return to Mexico then stronger than to Canada?
